Next Generation Choices Foundation (Lesscancer.org ) Mourns the Loss of board member Ronald B. Herberman, M.D. renown physician and scientist.

Rye, New Hampshire (PRWEB) June 05, 2013

Steve Twedt of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported yesterday morning, Ronald B. Herberman,M.D., the founding director of the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute, died unexpectedly this past weekend.

Herberman, 72, died June 1.

He is survived by his wife, Harriett, and his children, Holly and Steven. A private burial was held Monday.

Less Cancer Founder and President Bill Couzens said "this is very sad news. Dr. Herberman was a critical leader for Less Cancer and he helped to insure we, as an organization, stayed the course working under evidenced based science."

Couzens added, "as a non-scientist, I sought Dr. Herberman's help as a guiding scientific voice early in the development of the organization. With Dr. Herberman no question was ever too insignificant. He always made time to review commentary or help in unfold complicated matters relative to prevention and environmental health. Dr. Herberman was a hero to me as well as a less cancer hero and I will miss him."

Herberman, a Less Cancer Board Member, was the founding director of the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute (UPCI) and the UPMC Cancer Center.

In 1968, Dr. Herberman was a senior investigator in the immunology branch of the National Cancer Institute where he organized a research program related to tumor and cellular immunology. In 1971 he became head of a newly established cellular and tumor immunology section in the laboratory of Cell Biology of the National Cancer Institute.

During this period he had responsibility over a research program made up of several investigators who were researching cell mediated immune response to tumors in animal model systems and patients with cancer. As a result of this research, a new category of lymphocytes was discovered and termed natural killer (NK) cells. Since then, much of Dr. Herberman's research has been focused on the characterization of these natural effector cells and on their role in resistance to cancer growth.

Dr. Herberman, as a board member helped to guide Less Cancer (AKA Next Generation Choices Foundation) in the work for prevention under the rule of evidenced based science.

Dr Herberman was particularly helpful in guiding the organization to bring attention to the issue of increased incidences of melanoma.

Is a Gender-Bending Cartoon Hero OK? Patch Holly Springs-Hickory Flat, GA --

The latest superhero kids can root for has girl power—at least when he is not living the life of a 12-year-old boy.

American TV viewers on Saturday were able to flip to the premiere episode of SheZow on The Hub network (the network currently has the full premiere on its website).

The premise of the show, according to its page on the cable channel website: “Twelve-year-old Guy is an extreme dude who inherits the power ring of his deceased aunt—the amazing superhero SheZow! The ring gives him villain-battling super powers, but was meant to be worn by a girl and the result is absolutely she-larious!”

The cartoon is on a network that primarily targets to kids ages 2 to 11, according to a recent Los Angeles Times report.

*What do you think of this cartoon’s premise? Will you let your kids watch it, or have you let them watch it already? Should this cartoon be on a network targeted to young children?*

Michael Douglas has struck a blow for oral sex | Holly Baxter

$

The film star may have retracted his remarks about cunnilingus but he has raised awareness about this natural part of sex

In the past couple of days, cunnilingus has made a comeback (pun intended). Ever since Michael Douglas claimed that his marathon sessions had given him oral cancer, rather than the slightly more obvious culprits of drinking and smoking, everyone's had something to say about muff-diving. TMZ reports that ex-wife Diandra Douglas has made it clear to them that she "does not have HPV, period" under the headline "My lady junk was clean as a whistle", which makes it all a little awkward. Jezebel interviews a couple of doctors then concludes that we should stop panicking before Douglas "becomes the poster child for idiot teenage boys and abstinence-only advocates who already think vaginas are super icky". Meanwhile, site after site, publication after publication, outlet after outlet, has been running variations of the requisite "Is it true, are we all going to die?" features, in order to clarify whether or not every man who has ever pleasured his woman is due to pay the ultimate price.

Tabloid coverage has been a little more insidious, with the Daily Mail gleefully inserting a paragraph about Douglas's alleged sex addiction in a wider article about oral cancer and HPV. There seems to be an implication that Douglas's cancer was caused not by the good kind of oral sex with your loving and devoted wife, but promiscuity. Like when Brass Eye satirically suggested that we recognise the difference between "good Aids" (blood transfusions, infections from birth) and "bad Aids" (sexually transmitted), getting cancer through HPV – especially if everyone believes you used to be a sex addict – could definitely qualify as "bad cancer". Let us not forget that the hardier and most conservative knuckle-dragging mouth-breathers in the tabloids have been banging on about how the HPV vaccine for teenage girls will "encourage promiscuity"– that ultimate evil – for years. After all, without witnessing God's carcinogenic judgment rain down upon the lotharios of this world once in a while, how could we possibly stop our children from descending into chaotic, amoral rabbles of orgiastic anarchy?

Despite the bad press, it's somewhat refreshing to see the humble act of cunnilingus getting some attention. As far as oral sex goes, it's usually overshadowed by the blow job, which manages to dominate mainstream film, porn, magazine sex tips and musical references alike. Khia's song My Neck, My Back (Lick It) is the only song celebrating cunnilingus that has made it into the UK top 10 in my living memory – while "I'll take you to the candy shop/ I'll let you lick my lollipop" was the oft-quoted rhyming couplet of a global No 1 hit by 50 Cent in 2005. Whistle by Flo Rida was similarly a No 1 success last year, with its inspired admonitions to "blow my whistle", followed by the explanatory "just put your lips together and come real close", in case the former lyric had proven perplexing. Khia cut a solitary figure among a torrent of phallic metaphors. And now cunnilingus is back, but it comes at a price.

The HPV vaccine has been available and recommended for young girls for a while now, regardless of the initial right-wing outcry about encouraging one night stands. To give it better PR, it's usually known as "the cervical cancer vaccine", as HPV is responsible for 99% of cases of cervical cancer. Michael Douglas may have suffered from a cancer type which can (emphasis on can) be caused by HPV infection, but he will never know for sure: there is no medically reliable HPV test available for men. If anything, however, his case highlights the need for the other half of the population to be vaccinated against this preventable infection, something the Throat Cancer Foundation is campaigning for. HPV may be statistically more dangerous to women, but it is also dangerous to men, and in any case it makes no sense to ignore 50% of the population while attempting to protect the other half. While HPV exists among men, it will exist among women.

Since it seems more medically sound to vaccinate the entire population, the reason that the vaccine isn't offered to young boys must be because it can't be straightforwardly re-imagined as "the cervical cancer vaccine" when presented to parents. The explanation would instead have to focus on sex, and – yes – even cunnilingus. Discussions would have to delve into casual sex, broken or forgotten condoms, multiple partners, acts so deviant as licking out. Let's face it, no parent wants to be forced to imagine their little boy down at the business end of his girlfriend. But that shouldn't be a reason for chronic social irresponsibility.

Douglas may have retracted his claims that cunnilingus caused his cancer, but he's put tipping the velvet back on the map. If a 68-year-old man is chatting idly about his oral prowess during a press interview, you can bet that the teenagers behind the bike sheds are doing it. And it's time we started recognising cunnilingus as a natural part of sex, with all of its possible (and very small) risks, and talking about it. Because silence promotes ignorance and inaction, including decisions which really could cause HPV outbreaks leading to cancer in the future. Reported by guardian.co.uk 8 hours ago.

Burlington Rainforest Cafe Employees Bring Class Action Lawsuit Over Tipping Policy

Burlington Rainforest Cafe Employees Bring Class Action Lawsuit Over Tipping Policy Patch Burlington, MA --

Employees of the Rainforest Cafe in the Burlington Mall are bringing a class action lawsuit parent company Landry's over a policy that requires servers to share tips with employees who are not part of the wait staff, according to Chron.com article.

The servers bringing the case are Monica Cormier and Holly Peterson, both who have worked at the restaurant since 1998.

According to the article, the suit, filed June 3 in Middlesex Superior Court, alleges that Landry's wage and tip policy is a violation of the Massachusetts Tips Statue and the state's minimum wage law. The employees bringing the case are arguing that the policy of servers being forced to share tips with non-wait staff employees means the restaurant should be required to pay them the state minimum wage of $8.

They say that currently servers there make about $2.63 per hour.

The employees' lawyer, Hillary Schwab with the Boston law firm Fair Work said on Tuesday that Landry's has not been formally served with the suit. Once the company is officially served it will have 20 days to file a response. Reported by Patch 7 hours ago.

Holly Tucker was voted off "The Voice" on Tuesday on a single-elimination show that reduced the top six to the top five ahead of next week's semifinals. Tucker's ouster was not terribly surprising. In fact, it was highly predictable . Though the Baylor University marching-band saxophonist had a powerful voice and good-girl demeanor, she wasn't as charismatic or vocally exciting as the other young female country singers in the competition, Team Adam's Amber Carrington and her own fellow Team Blake member Danielle Bradbery.

Mohamed Al Fayed sues singer Paul Anka

$

Business magnate has taken Canadian singer to court over claims in the latter's autobiography about Dodi Fayed

Mohamed Al Fayed is suing 1950s/60s singer Paul Anka, accusing him of defamation, invasion of privacy, misuse of private information and the intentional infliction of emotional distress.

The case, heard at Los Angeles superior court, centres around the 71-year-old singer's autobiography, My Way, which includes numerous passages describing Anka's relationship with Dodi Fayed, Mohamed's son and the lover of Princess Diana. Al Fayed is demanding the book be withdrawn from sale.

In My Way, Anka claims to have been a "father figure" to Dodi, privy to the latter's secrets, scandals and bad behaviour. According to Anka's version of events, Dodi only moved from LA back to England – where he met Diana – after Anka had warned Mohamed that his son was getting into trouble. Diana and Dodi were killed in a car crash in Paris in August 1997.

According to Entertainment Law Digest, Al Fayed's lawyers argue that My Way falsely portrays their client "as being in agreement with Anka's outrageous assessment of Dodi's purported poor character". Anka describes the film producer "as a criminal, womanising, drug-using deadbeat who lived beyond his means and who had to have 'Daddy' come to his rescue". It is defamation, they insist, to allege that Mohamed "[ordered] Dodi to be removed from Los Angeles and made to return to England in order to correct, limit or punish his son's acknowledged misconduct".

While Anka did not have direct contact with Dodi in the days before his and Diana's death, he speculates in his book about the circumstances of their car crash. "[Their] hair-raising drive through Paris made sense, when I thought about it," he wrote. "One of Dodi's problems was that he was very paranoid. And he was especially paranoid about kidnapping, hold-ups and vendettas, always thinking that someone might want to kill him … When he got involved with [Diana], all that anxiety must have increased exponentially because the paparazzi were on their tracks, day and night. It was always about speed with him. Fast, fast, fast."

Al Fayed claims Anka has tried to "attract attention … and generate sales" by using his son's name to trade on "the public's insatiable interest in and enduring love for Princess Diana". He denies that Dodi's behaviour was a "contributing factor" in the Paris crash; it is "false and defamatory", he asserts, to portray the younger Fayed "as the type of person who would always tell a driver or chauffeur to drive faster to elude paparazzi".

Born in Canada, Anka was a hugely popular teen idol, topping the US charts at age 16. He went on to write songs for Tom Jones, Michael Jackson and Buddy Holly, as well as the English-language lyrics for Frank Sinatra's signature tune, My Way.

In addition to seeking punitive damages, Al Fayed is asking for Anka's memoir to be pulled from bookshelves. The singer's publishers have been named as co-defendants, as has the Daily Mail, which published excerpts from the book in March. Reported by guardian.co.uk 4 hours ago.

Leads all top cities over the 2012 Index – aggressive focus is credited.

San Diego, CA (PRWEB) June 05, 2013

Clean Edge, the world’s first research and advisory firm devoted to the clean technology industry, released its inaugural “U.S. Clean Tech Leadership Index” today. San Diego ranks number 7 out of 50 cities in the ‘Metro Index.’ California ranked number 1 in overall ‘State Index.’

The report’s methodology uses more than 20 metro-based performance indicators including: LEED certified projects, Energy Star buildings, electric vehicles, public transportation, green house gas emissions from large facilities, venture capital investments and clean energy patents.

San Diego shows the best improvement of any top-ranking city over the 2012 Index because of its aggressive focus on both public and private sectors in expanding the region’s cleantech economy.

“In a world that demands business data analytics in assessing performance and predictive modeling, this quantitative report captures this region’s ability to demonstrate its economic vision and cleantech brand,” said Holly Smithson, president and COO of CleanTECH San Diego. "This comprehensive benchmarking increasingly exerts the region's market gains while serving as a timely guidepost for financiers, policymakers, and companies."

San Diego shows a solid all-around performance of 11th place or higher in all four categories, which includes 1) green buildings, 2) advanced transportation, 3) clean tech investment, innovation, workforce and 4) clean electricity and carbon management.

“With over 800 clean tech companies in the region and San Diego’s top ranking in the 'U.S. Clean Tech Leadership Index,' the firepower to translate cleantech innovation, technology and collaboration into an economic engine and replicable model is intensifying," Smithson added. "CleanTECH San Diego, through its member companies and industry stakeholders, will continue to ensure the region maintains its leadership position."

About CleanTECH San Diego
CleanTECH San Diego is a private, non-profit member organization formed in 2007. As one of the nation's premier cleantech cluster organizations, its mission is to position the region as a global leader in the cleantech economy. CleanTECH San Diego serves as a catalyst for a diverse group of stakeholders to advance a common agenda. To learn more, visit http://www.cleantechsandiego.org. Reported by PRWeb 2 hours ago.

Live Athletics: Diamond League, Rome | Ultimate Shopper | Up The Women | Coma | The Most Dangerous Man In Tudor England | David Walliams: Snapshot In Time | The Alps Murders | Lemon La Vida Loca

*Live Athletics: Diamond League, Rome
7pm, BBC3
*

Round five of the elite athletics series. All eyes, and cameraphones, will be trained as ever on the loping figure of Usain Bolt who, despite recently recording his worst ever 100m final time – a measly 10.09, though he did win the race – is still the man to beat. Elsewhere, Olympic gold medallist Allyson Felix competes in the 200m, while British hopes include Christine Ohuruogu in the 400m, Shara Proctor in the long jump, and Steven Lewis in the pole vault. Gwilym Mumford

*Ultimate Shopper
8pm, TLC
*

The search is on for Britain's Ultimate Shopper, a title that will surely put an end to fears about the dearth of genuine talent on reality TV. Former Neighbours and FHM stalwart Holly Valance heads up the judging panel as four shopaholics are put through a series of style-based challenges. Who can win back their ex with an envelope clutch? Who looks like "Wilma Flintstone on steroids"? And which hapless contestant will find out that they were never really very fashionable in the first place? There will be tears. Stephanie Soh

**Up The Women*
8.30pm, BBC4
*

The finger of suspicion points at the members of the fledgling suffragette craft circle after a naked statue in the village is vandalised in the name of equality. Writer and star Jessica Hynes always faced a struggle in recapturing the brilliance of her best work, but even so, this should be far more sparky and spirited. There's a nice gag on passing off shop-bought as home-made, but it's a sad state of affairs when even a riff on euphemisms for female genitals doesn't raise a guilty chuckle. Bim Adewunmi

**Coma*
9pm, Channel 5
*

Based on a novel by Robin Cook and subsequent 1978 movie of the same name, this thriller – co-produced by the late Tony Scott – stars Lauren Ambrose as a medical student who becomes suspicious at the number of operations that result in patients lapsing into comas, then being transferred to the mysterious Jefferson Institute. Richard Dreyfuss and James Woods star, as does Geena Davis as the sinister Dr Lindquist. The extended mini-series treatment does greater justice to the book than the compressed film version. David Stubbs

**The Most Dangerous Man In Tudor England*
9pm, BBC2
*

William Tyndale was as influential as Shakespeare in shaping our language, says Melvyn Bragg in his profile of the man who defied the establishment by translating the Bible into English. Surrounded by heretic-hunters, Tyndale sacrificed his life so that ordinary folk could read the word of God. Not only did his work herald a new age of Christianity, one where the church's iron grip was significantly loosened, but without the simple idioms that litter his translation, modern English would be immeasurably poorer. Rachel Aroesti

**David Walliams: Snapshot In Time*
9pm, ITV
*

In which David Walliams goes back to school in an attempt to retrace his very first foray into acting – a production of All The King's Men at Reigate Grammar – a performance exhibiting the same fondness for cross-dressing that flavoured his later comic career. Though Walliams finds it tricky to turn up any of the old faces from the play, which he credits with setting him on the path to stardom, there are, luckily, plenty of others, including his old teachers and family, to pat him on the back. Ben Arnold

*The Alps Murders
10pm, Channel 4*

When a British family and a French cyclist were gunned down in the French Alps last year, it sparked a pan-European investigation, and a whole lot of speculation. With no arrests made, and no suspects in the frame, the still-unsolved crime has prompted all manner of conspiracy theories, with rumours of family feuds, mysterious heiresses and secret Swiss bank accounts. In this look behind the headlines, a close friend of the murdered Al-Hilli family is interviewed, along with the hiker who stumbled on the bloody scene. Ali Catterall

*Lemon La Vida Loca
10pm, ITV2*

It's easy to laugh along with Keith Lemon when he's flanked by celebrities sniggering and looking shocked at his every word on Celebrity Juice, but when the beast is unleashed into his own "reality" show, the joke wears a little thin. Despite this, Leigh Francis's comic creation is back with another series of Lemon La Vida Loca and Keith's now single, so that gives him ample opportunity for light-hearted women-pestering, best illustrated by his foray into music with the charmingly titled debut I Wanna Go On You. Congress Fails to Answer Core IRS Scandal Questions

Three weeks ago, Breitbart News published an article listing 10 questions the Obama Administration must answer about the Internal Revenue Service’s (IRS) targeting of conservative groups for scrutiny and harassment throughout the 2010 and 2012 election cycles.

Yet after weeks of House and Senate hearings, and much grandstanding by Obama Administration officials, not a single question posed has been answered.

Here, then, are just a few of the questions lawmakers must obtain answers to beyond the classic question, “What did the Administration know and when did it know it?”

1. Who inside the IRS hatched the plan to target conservatives and what, if any, connections do they, their associates, or superiors have to the Obama White House, campaign team, or other political organizations?
2. Who at the IRS leaked confidential tax documents to the progressive-leaning journalism group ProPublica, an action which the IRS official manual says can result in up to five years in prison and fines of up to $5,000?
3. Who are the two “rogue” individuals disgraced former IRS Commissioner Stevens said went “off the reservation” and acted “overly aggressive,” and what, if any, connections do they have politically? If, as the Inspector General report alleges, political motivations were not driving the targeting of conservatives, then what was? Also, what “discipline” did the two rogue agents receive?
4. Did IRS agents coordinate with Sen. Carl Levin (D-MI) or his staff to “go after them [conservative groups],” as he told the New York Times, following Levin’s letters to then-IRS Commissioner Doug Shulman and Director Lois Lerner?
5. Did Sen. Max Baucus (D-MO) or his staff communicate or coordinate with IRS agents after Baucus wrote this September 28, 2010 letter instructing then-Commissioner Douglas Shulman to have his “agency survey major 401(c)(4), (c)(5) and (c)(6) organizations to determine whether they are acting as conduits for major donors advancing their own private interests”?
6. What communications took place between IRS agents and the following senators and their staffs following the delivery of this jointly written letter demanding the IRS crack down on “abuse of the tax code by political groups focused on federal election activities”: Sen. Charles Schumer (D-NY), Sen. Michael Bennet (D-CO ), Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-OR), Sen. Tom Udall (D-NM), Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), and Sen. Al Franken (D-MN)?
7. What communications existed between Obama reelection campaign co-chair Joe Solomonese, whom the National Organization for Marriage (NOM) alleges received its confidential tax returns, and IRS agents?
8. What portion of Obama’s 79% increase in audits of charities were of conservative groups?
9. If political motivations were not driving the selective targeting of 500 conservative organizations, then why were a similar number of liberal groups not harassed?
10. What role did IRS Rulings and Agreements Division Director Holly Paz, who in 2008 donated $2,000 to Obama, play in ratcheting up IRS investigations, as she promised she would in June 2012?

The Administration's delay and distract strategy is working.

If lawmakers cannot obtain real answers to simple questions, they need to appoint a special prosecutor who can.
