Cherokee Schools Address Common Core Criticism

Patch Holly Springs-Hickory Flat, GA --

In an effort to address information floating in some circles on Common Core standards, the Cherokee County School District has released a list of questions and answers on the subject.

The document (see attached .PDF), includes a list of the most frequently asked questions, and recounts the history and purpose of Common Core.

Common Core standards are federal guidelines that stipulate students from kindergarten to 12th grade should be taught the same standards in core subjects such as English/language arts, math and science.

Forty-five states, including Georgia, have implemented the standards, which are part of the federal government's Race To The Top initiative.

Superintendent of Schools Dr. Frank Petruzelo said the Q&A was developed to separate some of the "fact and fiction" surrounding the standards.

Common Core, he said, is not curricula developed by teachers and school districts, but are a set of standards education professionals agree students should learn at certain grade levels.

The issue of Common Core has been a contentious one between some of the Cherokee County School Board members.

Kelly Marlow last month made a request to establish a citizens committee to review the standards, but that request was rejected by Petruzielo and a majority of the board.

See the attached .PDF to see the district's Q&A.
