Waltham WI group celebrates first anniversary This is Grimsby --

REACHING their one-year anniversary was the icing on the cake for these cheeky Women's Institute members.

For the past 12 months the Waltham group have fought against the "jam and Jerusalem" reputation of the WI and won.

Now with 90 members they are the fastest growing WI in the Humber area and have been hailed the federation's "success story".

The group is so popular, there is now a waiting list to join – and after just three meetings, the membership was 40.

President Holly Smith, 29, and vice-president Rachel Scott, 34, have loved every second of it.

Celebrating with a glass of Pimms, Rachel, who works in children's services for the NHS, said: "It has been an interesting year and we have learned a lot along the way.

"Now we are all really good friends. It has been a great way to bring the village back together. We walk down the street and there is always someone to say hello to now.

"It has broken down barriers and rid it of the stigma that it is only for older people. It is not all about jam and Jerusalem."

And their success is spreading to other new groups, including Scartho, who started up three months ago. Members are aged between early 20s and late 70s, and together they have enjoyed supporting charitable causes – including their cheeky knicker campaign where they bought knickers to be donated to Women's Aid North East Lincolnshire.

As well as a host of fascinating guest speakers, they have held wine and cheese nights, and celebrated their milestone date with a Pimms party.

Waltham born and bred, Holly, mother to Nell, 5, added: "Waltham is a big village that is growing by the day. It has got a lot of young people, and young mums, so we are offering them a nice place to come and drink tea, learn from fascinating people and have a good time.

"Because we have a lot of members now, we also have the power to make a difference to people's lives and the local community."

The future of the group is looking rosy, with the waiting list continuing to grow – and the reputation of WI continuing to improve with the times.

Secretary Karina Websell, 40, added: "We have tried to bring the WI into the 21st century. We all feel a huge sense of achievement. We have brought something into the village that is here to stay."

Programme co-ordinator and mother-of-two Samantha Hammond, 29, is the newest member of the committee.

She said: "We are doing modern things for all ages, and we have a good laugh together."

The group meets on the second Monday of each month in All Saints' Church Hall, Waltham. For further information, call Holly Smith on 07914 406291. Reported by This is 18 hours ago.
