This is Cornwall --

One of the world's most famous singer-songwriters could lead a big band record bid at a Westcountry beach resort.

Organisers are hoping to persuade Sir Paul McCartney to join more than 2,000 people of all ages and musical abilities signed-up to the 'Guitars on the Beach' event in Lyme Regis.

The peaceful Dorset town will become abuzz with the sound of guitars for a whole weekend when it hosts the attempt to set a new record for Britain's biggest band playing one song.

Dozens of people flocked to the beach early on Sunday morning to take part in a an MTV-style promotional video, shot partly from a radio-controlled helicopter camera.

Geoff Baker, who was McCartney's PR chief for 15 years, dreamed up the event with his friend and star chef, Mark Hix, after they discovered there was no existing record for Britain's biggest band. "I just reckoned there are thousands of people, mainly blokes, who have always dreamt of being in a band just the once, and I figured, well, then why not be in Britain's biggest," he said.

Organisers say they are confident 3,000 guitarists – from proper rock stars to absolute beginners – will gather on the beach to simultaneously play Buddy Holly's Rave On.

Mr Baker described the event as a "huge coup" for the Marine Theatre and Lyme Regis.

He said: "The idea has really touched a pulse. We've got doctors, lawyers, students, six-year-olds to 80-year-olds as well as disabled guitarists in wheelchairs. It's really mushroomed."

Mr Baker added: "Sir Paul is on a world tour, but he said he's checking to see if he can fit in the Guitars On The Beach gig. If he does makes it, it'll be even better."

Founding member of the Stranglers Hugh Cornwell, as well as McCartney's lead guitarist Robbie McIntosh, are among those who have signed up to the event on September 7.

Mr McIntosh, who lives in Dorset with his wife and has four children, has also worked with such luminaries as Chrissie Hynde, John Mayer, Roger Daltrey, Mark Knopfler, Chuck Berry, Norah Jones, Cher, Joe Cocker, Talk Talk, Paul Young and Kirsty McColl. He is taking to the stage in Lyme Regis on September 6 in order to prelude Guitars on the Beach.

The three-minute event, to coincide with what would have been Buddy Holly's 77th birthday, is being sponsored by Fender – the world's biggest guitar company.
