City gets into the beat for fantastic Caribbean carnival This is Nottingham --

THE Caribbean Carnival came to town at the weekend and, for one local artist, it was a highlight of her year.

Hazel Bromiley, of Arnold, has been a member of the Arnold Art Society for "donkey's years" and was capturing the carnival's atmosphere in her sketchpad.

She said: "I just draw if I see somebody interesting. There was a very glamorous lady.

"I've never made it to the carnival before and the parade's what I came to see."

The parade, made up of dozens of floats and hundreds of people, made its way from the city centre to the carnival site at The Forest recreation ground yesterday afternoon.

People lined the route as performers of all ages danced their way along the streets.

Performer Ronald Howard, originally from Trinidad, was taking part in the UK Trini group's pack of cards-themed troupe.

He said: "We're representing the higher orders of the cards, the kings and queens and, of course, the jokers – you can't have one without the other!

"Trinidad is the heart of carnival."

The carnival on The Forest was on all weekend and provided plenty more entertainment with a fun fair, live acts and food stalls.

One performer was 13-year-old Holly Fallon of Bracadale Road, in Arnold, who was singing at the Kemet FM radio stage.

Redhill Academy pupil Holly, who has been singing since taking up a microphone on a family holiday at eight-years-old, said: "I love singing and being asked to sing here was a surprise – it's a huge audience. I'm 13, I'm not used to being on the radio!"

Parents Carole and Andy Fallon were there to cheer her on, and Mrs Fallon said: "We're very proud of her and how far she has progressed. She's got such a mature voice for her age, people are surprised that this little girl has this voice."

Main stage acts over the weekend included Ms Dynamite as well as local talent, while a last-minute replacement was drafted in for the Red Bull Sound System stage.

Electronic music artist and one third of band Magnetic Man, Artwork, put in a surprise appearance on Saturday night after headline act Breach was stranded in Amsterdam by a delayed flight.

Breach eventually made it to play at the official after-party.

Staging manager Leighton Campbell said the carnival prides itself on supporting local talent, adding: "We have a lot of local unsigned acts come on the stage.

"All this at the ground is extra value, to set ourselves apart from some of the other carnivals in the UK – the parade's the main feature."

The ground was packed with families and friends enjoying the entertainment on offer and, with the weather co-operating, carnival-goers relaxed on the grass to take in the atmosphere.

Festival organiser Errol Baker, who has been involved with the carnival for more than 20 years, said: "We can give the kids, the parents and all the different kinds of people in Nottingham an event that they all can come and enjoy and show off the different flavours that make Nottingham, Nottingham."
