This is Sussex --
CRAWLEY Athletics Club enjoyed a successful weekend as their promising youngsters competed in the South of England U15 and U17 championships at the Julie Rose stadium, Kent.
Holly Talbut-Smith won a silver medal in the U17 girls' 300m hurdles final.
In the U15 girls' 100m sprint, both Abigail and Sophie Linturn made the final despite windy conditions, with Abigail finishing seventh, while Sophie placed eighth. Sophie also qualified for the 200m final, finishing sixth in 27.35secs.
Tamsin Campbell claimed silver in the U15 pole vault, but had to withdraw from the high jump due to a back injury.
Lillie Francs also competed in the U15 high jump, placing fifth in 1.55m.
U17 multi-eventer Justin Tarrant had a busy weekend as he claimed more top positions than any other Crawley athlete. Tarrant won a silver in the shot put, a bronze in the discus and placed seventh and eighth in the long jump and pole vault. Tarrant will travel to Birmingham in September to compete in the English Schools Championships.
The stand out performance of the weekend came from talented thrower Munroe Ritchie winning gold in the U17 men's hammer to become the South of England champion. Munroe took the lead in the first round of the competition with a throw of 58.52m, a distance which he would better three times as he finished by throwing 59.84m to capture gold, beating the reigning English schools champion in the process.
Several older Crawley athletes competed in an open meeting at Bromley on Saturday.
U20 Joel Buckett came fourth in the South of England inter counties last weekend, placing second in the senior men's 400m hurdles, beating his personal best by over two seconds finishing in 56.03.
Fellow hurdler Amy Barclay also took to the stage in windy 100m and 200m sprints, coming first in her 200m with a time of 26.03 and eighth in her 100m in 12.81. Craig Cox ran in the senior men's 400m sprint in a season's best time of 50.25 seconds. Reported by This is 14 hours ago.
