With all the animals Albany is dealing with — from wild turkeys to backyard goats — one reader is bringing deer into the mix.

Recently, a petition seeking to change Albany code regulating backyard goats has started. In Berkeley, residents can keep up to two female goats.

"In El Cerrito, we get wild deer for free and with no obligation," reader Holly Rose Tweeted to @BerkeleyPatch.

Montgomery County-Native Bradley Cooper Preps for Oscar Night

Montgomery County-Native Bradley Cooper Preps for Oscar Night Patch Plymouth-Whitemarsh, PA --

As viewers make the popcorn and snuggle up on the couch, Bradley Cooper is likely checking his tux, checking the limo times and stretching for a long walk down the red carpet.

The Oscars are this Sunday. The awards will air at 7 p.m. Sunday on ABC. Up for best actor is the Montgomery County-born and -raised Bradley Cooper. His work in "Silver Linings Playbook" has helped to net the flick eight nominees including best actor, best actress (his co-star Jennifer Lawrence), best picture and best director (David O. Russell).

The Philadelphia-based flick was a nice return home for the local man, who grew up in Jenkintown. He said he is looking forward to Oscar night, but win or lose is proud of the movie.

"I love the Oscars, but truly all I care about is that people enjoy this movie," said Cooper in an interview with ABC News. (The full interview is attached to this story.)

He told Yahoo! News, "I'm confused, happy and really excited" about Oscar night.

He said he did think of one thing that may help him remain calm.

"I'll be able to drink this time. I was only 20 last time [when nominated for Winter's Bone]," Cooper told Yahoo!. "So hopefully I'll be more comfortable. Or at least drunk... "

In an interview with Los Angeles ABC 7, Cooper said his date to the red carpet will be his mom.

"She's a force, let me tell you. Don't mess with her. She's Italian from South Philly, no filter," said Cooper. "It's going to be an interesting red carpet, I'll just say that."

The man who calls Robert Di Nero his "friend," said he was happy to work alongside him again in this movie. The two had previously paired up in "Limitless."

He said when he only had a week to prepare, "Bob" helped to calm him.

"Bob said, ‘You’re from Philly, you are Italian/Irish, you know, it’s all there. You’re going to be fine,'" said Cooper to ABC News.

The other calming factor was being "home" to shoot the entire film. He said he was happy to don a DeSean Jackson Eagles jersey much of the shooting.

"I love the Eagles," he said.

Through it all, Cooper said he's remained quite humble.

"If this industry doesn’t humble you, it does nothing else," he told ABC. "When social media is at your finger tips .... well ... humility..."

He says he tries not to read social media or reviews about him or his movies.

Cooper said it was his upbringing in the area that helped to mold him into the actor he is today.

"He described Philadelphia as a 'very idiosyncratic' city," said CBS Good Morning of Cooper. "His Italian mother, Gloria, stayed home with Bradley and his sister, Holly, while his Irish father, Charles, traded stocks. After work, he would teach his son about movies."

"I have a tremendous amount of pride because my family's roots are imbedded in Philly," he told CBS.

Cooper was spotted during shooting in Norristown. Check out the full gallery here. Cooper was here in 2011 to shoot portions of Silver Linings Playbook. Reported by Patch 1 hour ago.

Cheltenham Parkrun: 147 reasons to be proud

Cheltenham Parkrun: 147 reasons to be proud This is Gloucestershire --

Parkrun is a running craze that has motivated thousands of people to get involved in timed 5K running every week, writes Phil Norris.
And if the second-ever Cheltenham Parkrun is anything to go by, the town has definitely caught the running bug.
As a keen runner, but only an occasional competitor in races, I headed down to Pittville Park today at 9am to see if last week's successful launch would be matched on a bitterly cold February morning.
Although this was my first Cheltenham Parkrun, I had taken part in the Frimley Green Parkrun in Surrey last weekend and I was keen to equal or beat my 21 minute and 44 second finishing time.
The Frimley Green event was two-laps along muddy canal banks and soggy fields, a great location but no doubt a hindrance to decent times.
So, knowing the three-laps around Pittville Park were mainly on hard surfaces (with just a short part across fields) I was looking forward to getting a good time.
Chatting with people before the start, I knew people had very different motives for running:  general fitness, wanting to beat personal bests, aiming to win.
And I was glad that the Cheltenham Parkrun had the same vibe and relaxed atmosphere that I had seen in Surrey, and at the Parkrun in the Forest of Dean which I had witnessed but not taken part in.
One woman I spoke, Gail Smith, 55,  to was taking advantage of the run while returning to Gloucestershire from her home in France, and Jerry Porter, 57, and his daughter Kathryn, 24, from Prestbury were doing the run together in an effort to keep fit.
Although I had no pretence of being part of the front runners, I did want to get under  21 minutes as a stepping stone to achieving my medium-term goal of going under 20 minutes.
I hoped the cold would motivate me to go even faster than last week.
Lining up raring to go at 9am with 147 others, I found myself out of position a bit as people fanned out across the start line to get off to a clear run.
I was worried that some of the paths in the park would get congested, so I had to manoeuvre myself to the wrong side of the start line.
As the runners shot off, I found myself in a good position – the runners ahead of me were going faster than I could, so that gave me a bit of a motivation to keep my pace up.
I had also feared that sharing the park with the general public – dog walkers, early morning strollers, cyclists and non-Parkrun joggers – would cause conflict.
As it was, the Parkrunners soon spread out nicely, and while a few dogs got a little overexcited with the amount of joggers they could chase, no ankles appeared to be nipped and no small dogs appeared to be trampled.
The first lap round the lake went well, and there were marshals around to make sure you didn't run into bollards or take the wrong corner.
There was, however, one slightly ambiguous corner that people took wrong, turning right at a bench in the field rather than going on to a tree and then turning right.
I followed a batch of runners who, in effect, cut a corner. But I felt so bad about it that I purposefully ran a bit longer at one point to, I hope, balance out the shortcut.
Although I am competitive, cutting a corner would only cheat me and I wanted the time I achieved to be a real time, otherwise it's meaningless.
The first lap over with, I knew exactly what to expect on the second. No big hills, obviously, a slightly muddy field, and only the cold and my fitness to worry about.
As the third lap neared its end, I thought I would have a late burst to try to knock a few seconds off. But, in my second mistake of the race, I had wrongly assumed that the finish was exactly where the start was.
It wasn't, so as I reached my peak I realised I had a bit more to run. The people in front I had in my sights as targets, sped away, but I knew I had enough of a gap to not lose my position.
I made it across the line, grabbed my 'chip' and registered my time.
My analogue watch isn't great at working out my exact time, but I thought I had just edged last week's time.
However, as I logged on later today, I realised I was just off my target in 21.57, in 25th place out of 147.
And, because Parkrun is so well organised, you get a great breakdown of your stats.
So I know I was also 24th male, and fourth in my age category, veteran male 40-44. They also marked this as my PB, although I had done faster last week.
Speaking to people after the run, it was clear that people had enjoyed it for a whole host of reasons.
For some, it was the time, for others, it was completing it.
And the beauty of the Parkrun is that every one of the 147 runners is to be admired.
Whether it is winner Phil Beastall who finished in a remarkable time of 17.12, those who finished the course in a PB, or those who got out of bed on a cold Saturday morning to run three times round a park for no other reason than to be fit and active, everyone achieved something today.
And it was also clear, that many of those finishing will be returning for many weeks to come.

Two More Rounds of Heavy Rain for Holly Springs, Hickory Flat Patch Holly Springs-Hickory Flat, GA --

Most of Georgia, including Holly Springs, is in for a deluge as two rounds of heavy rain likely start Thursday and continue through Tuesday, so get your rain boots and umbrellas ready.

Two to 4 inches and 4 to 8 inches of rain have already fallen on north and central Georgia, respectively, since the beginning of February.

That's prompting concerns of flash flooding, extensive street flooding and isolated significant flooding, according to the National Weather Service's Hydrologic Outlook, which covers Cherokee and a slew of other counties in north and central Georgia.

Storms systems moving in and expected to bring moisture into the Gulf are to blame.

Widespread rain is expected early Friday through Saturday along with periods of heavy rain again Monday, which should end by Tuesday morning.

Areas south of a line from Rome to Cumming to Homer could see 4 to 6 inches of rain or more, while north Georgia may get 1 to 3 inches. Higher amounts in some areas are possible.

In Holly Springs, expect rain Thursday mainly after 10 p.m., then showers through early Saturday.

Sunday should bring sunny skies with temperatures in the low 60s, according to the NWS forecast.

Monday is slated to be mostly cloudy with a chance of rain and temperatures rising to the mid-50s and lows in the 40s.

Tuesday could bring rain early, but sunny skies will make an appearance in the afternoon. Temperatures will be around 57 degrees.

Patch Holly Springs-Hickory Flat, GA --

The Holly Springs City Council voted to approve the purchase of a license plate reader during its meeting on Thursday.

The council gave its stamp of approval for the Holly Springs Police Department to purchase a Vigilant Video four-camera license plate reader for $25,160 from Synergistic Software, Inc.

The council also heard from County Commisison Chairman Buzz Ahrens, who discussed the Cherokee Office of Economic Development.

Ahrens told the council that CoED needs an additional employee and funding to advertise and participate in trade shows and state meetings.

He also said CoED would like funds to build up a local incentive fund.

Ahrens has asked each city in Cherokee County to make a financial contribution to CoED's budget with a three-year commitment.

Holly Springs Mayor Tim Downing said the council would have to further discuss tax equity issues, possible competition betweens the county and its cities tax and possibly revamping the Cherokee County Development Authority to allow each city to have a representative on the board.

Council member Karen Barnett was not present.

Local Women's Football Team Predicted to Go 0-4 in Inaugural Season Patch Dacula, GA --

With just two months to go before the Atlanta Steam begins play, some are predicting the Gwinnett women's Legends Football League team will have a less than stellar opening season.

According to an article in lfl360.com, linebacker Adrian Purnell of the Jacksonville Breeze talked some smack on Commissioner’s Corner, “…everyone thinks we are looking forward to the Atlanta game this year because everyone is talking a big game about them. (They) are the least of my worries right now.” Literally days later, “The List” guaranteed Atlanta to go 0-4.

Atlanta wide receiver Krista Cross’ response was “{forget} the world. They got it backwards, 4-0.”

Wide receiver Holly Oakes stated, “While 0-4 is totally not going to happen, it definitely made some people mad. I was upset too, but now we are already looking past that. It just fired us up even more.”

The LFL, of course, is the renamed Lingerie Football League. Atlanta is a new team in 2013, and already is practicing for its Gwinnett debut on April 13 vs. Omaha at the Gwinnett Arena. The Steam also will play in Gwinnett in May.

In the LFL, football is seven-on-seven, with no kickoffs, punting or field goals.

For practice footage and interviews, see the attached video.

Montgomery County-Native Bradley Cooper Preps for Oscar Night

Montgomery County-Native Bradley Cooper Preps for Oscar Night Patch Lower Gwynedd-Ambler-Whitpain, PA --

The man who calls Robert De Niro his "friend," said he was happy to work alongside him again in this movie.

Reported by Patch 18 hours ago.

Residents To Put WellStar's Plans in Holly Springs Under Microscope

Residents To Put WellStar's Plans in Holly Springs Under Microscope Patch Canton-Sixes, GA --

While WellStar Health System has decided not to proceed with obtaining a green light from the state for a free-standing emergency department in Holly Springs, that isn't stopping residents from organizing to inform their neighbors about the company's plans.

A meeting has been set for 6:30 p.m. Monday at Liberty Elementary School for residents who live in BridgeMill and along Sixes Road to learn about what WellStar would like to do with roughly 62 acres on the southwest corner of Sixes Road and I-575.

Jay Patouillet, president of the BridgeMill Community Association, said the homeowners association of BridgeMill and The Falls of Cherokee decided to organize a meeting to inform residents about WellStar's plans due to the proximity of the project to adjacent neighborhoods.

Calling any development on the area a "community issue," Patouillet said representatives with WellStar, Northside Hospital, Cherokee County and the city of Holly Springs have also been invited to the meeting.

Patouillet said he expects at least 75 people to attend the meeting.

WellStar in January initially filed a letter of intent with the Georgia Department of Community Health to build a $21 million off-site emergency center on Sixes Road at Interstate 575.

However, WellStar Spokesman Keith Bowermaster said the company decided not to file for a certificate of need review to move forward with their request.

The CON has to be filed 30 days after a letter of intent is filed with the department. The CON Program evaluates proposals for new health care facilities or services.

Bowermaster told Patch earlier this month that there's "no precedent" in Georgia for a free-standing emergency department to get the CON stamp of approval.

"We are very interested in this clinical model, but [we] elected to not file the CONs at this time," he said. "We anticipate that DCH will define a path for serving the community with this new approach."

Bowermaster went on to say that free-standing emergency departments "are consistent with WellStar's commitment to innovative outpatient services."

While they aren't pursuing a CON for the area, they aren't necessarily abandoning plans for the site. The company is set to go back before the Holly Springs Planning and Zoning Commission to discuss their plans at 7 p.m. Thursday Feb. 28.

The meeting will be held in the Holly Springs Municipal Court chambers.

The company has applied with the city to rezone the property from general commercial/mixed used to solely general commercial.

They've also requested a conditional use permit to operate a hospital or similar business and a personal/nursing care home.  Reported by Patch 2 hours ago.

Proposed Charter School Would Serve All Counties

Proposed Charter School Would Serve All Counties Patch Holly Springs-Hickory Flat, GA --

A proposed charter school in Forsyth County that would be open to all children in the state is hosting a Town Hall to introduce itself to the community on Tuesday.

Following the November election in which voters approved an amendment giving the state the power to approve charter schools, a group of parents and educators have filed an intent to launch the International Charter School of Atlanta.

The group says that the school would be the first and only triple-language immersion K through 8th grade school open to all children in Georgia.

"We've had way more intents to apply than expected," so far, said Christina Crumbley, one of the school's board members. She said the school has seen 160 intents and "we haven't even held our first town hall."

The school's board members have scouted a location in Forsyth and plan to have the school operating in August.

“By having a public school focused on developing bilingual/trilingual students with an international perspective will only further the economic growth of Atlanta and the state,” said Marisa Kashapov, one of ICSAtlanta’s founding board members, in a press release. “The investment which comes from county taxes for public schools, which will in turn go towards this new international charter school, will both equip our children with a competitive advantage as well as provide a cutting-edge future workforce for the state.”

The town hall will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 26, at 7 p.m. at Fowler Park's recreation center, 4110 Carolene Way, near the intersection of Atlanta Highway and Castleberry Road in Cumming.

For more details and to register for the event, visit ICSAtlanta's website. Families can also fill out an "intent to apply" form on the school’s website. For more information, call (470) 253-0873. Reported by Patch 19 minutes ago.
