Top five beach cafes in Devon and Cornwall Shelter from the sun (or rain!) at the seaside with our choice of the top five beach cafes in Devon and Cornwall. Porthminster Cafe, St Ives To pinch a line or two from Buddy Holly: "The sun is out, the sky is blue, there ain't a cloud to spoil the view..." It may have been raining in Buddy's heart but my guess is he'd be pretty happy at this beautiful cafe on the beach in St Ives (pictured). It does, as you would expect, fantastic fish on a menu dominated by Mediterranean and Asian flavours.... Reported by Western Morning News 20 hours ago.

AMTC Grads Join the Fight Against Human Trafficking with 8 Days Film

Using God's Gifts in Arts and Entertainment to Transform Culture.

Dallas, TX. (PRWEB) July 29, 2014

With the marching orders of “Making Good Bolder,” Actors, Models and Talent for Christ Staff, Grads and Grad families joined together with 8 DAYS film to make a stand against the evil of sex trafficking. From lead actress (Nicole Smolen) to supporting actors (Kim Baldwin Turner, Luke Burton, Hans Ndam, Bryson Funk, Meagan Bruce, Dennis Lockman, Marikje, Austen Williams, Brandon Chase, Miles Wooden, Malia Brown, McKenna Sparks, Harrison and Christian Schick, Kiyomi Sanders, Savannah Holladay…) to many of the extras, the cast and crew is full of AMTC Grads. Eager to use their talents to “do good” and fight this crime, grad families were quick to get involved.

“Everyone has something to offer.” Director and Presenter for AMTC, Jaco Booyens says. “Whether it be acting, organizing, drawing, music, photography, catering, serving… God gave you something to bless and serve people. We are surrounded by too many talented people to not make a difference.”

That’s what the AMTC family aims to do. The feature film—inspired by actual events—depicts the unexpected and heart-wrenching form of modern day slavery that happens in our backyards, hotels and neighborhoods across the nation.

“Sex trafficking is a silent faceless epidemic and 8 DAYS will thrust Americans into realizing the truth about this crime,” says Jaco Booyens, Director of 8 DAYS. “This is not a religious, political or racial issue, it is an unacceptable issue and we must stop the sex trafficking of our American children.”

Based in the Dallas Hub, families, staff and performers banded together to hold fundraisers, coordinate catering and produce a feature film. AMTC Staff members Jaco Booyens (Director) and Philipa Booyens (Screenwriter) led the charge to get involved. Katrina Cook of Katz Kasting volunteered to cast the film. As a long time agent of AMTC, she found the best talent and many of them happened to be AMTC grads. AMTC head acting coach Chey Sanders coached the actors through their scenes. Texas manager Dan Funk and wife Krystal (an AMTC TA), along with grad mom Karen Jenkins organized, produced and coordinated people, props, vehicles, licenses and locations. Dallas Team Leaders Gina Arreaga and Rhonda Fullerton were instrumental in the production of the film (also look out for their cameo appearances!). Grad mom Ricki Boone Marcum led catering. Model coach David Collins led wardrobe design and organization. AMTC make up artist Meagan D’Von led a team of make up and hair artists including Holly Ernst and Elaine Barnett. AMTC grad Olivia Delaney and coach Bryson Funk created the theme song entitled FADE OUT for the film. The soundtrack for the film is filled with AMTC grads.

For a full list of cast and crew, please visit their IMDB page which is linked on their website: http://www.findamber.com.

The 8 DAYS movement (dedicated to ending human trafficking) is being catapulted by the nationwide premieres and awareness campaigns. The events in eight major US cities are collectively and individually fundraisers, political rallies, screenings and concerts that benefit local anti-sex trafficking organizations. The approach is unconventional and unique, with ticket sales as well as funds raised going directly to the local anti-sex trafficking organizations. These organizations will use these funds to help with rescuing and rehabilitating victims as well as building and expanding safe homes.

“It is our goal that by dispersing funds to many organizations we can truly share together in the blessing of support and the burden of the fight,” explains film Director, Jaco Booyens. “The problem will not end overnight, but we don’t intend to allow the fight to end either.”

Premiere Info:

Date                    City
September 9        Los Angeles, CA
September 11        Seattle, WA
September 16         New York City, NY

Nuisance Flooding An Increasing Problem Due To Rising Sea Levels

*April Flowers for redOrbit.com - Your Universe Online*

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) released a technical report on Monday revealing that of the top 10 US cities that have seen an increase in nuisance flooding, eight are on the East Coast.

Nuisance flooding causes public inconveniences such as frequent road closures, overwhelmed storm drains and compromised infrastructure, and is the result of rising sea levels. Such flooding has increased along all three US coasts between 300 and 925 percent since the 1960s.

Key findings of "Sea Level Rise and Nuisance Flood Frequency Changes around the United States" report include: the most increase in the number of flood days is tied between Annapolis and Baltimore, Maryland with more than 920 percent since 1960; on the Gulf Coast, Port Isobel, Texas has seen an increase of 547 percent in the same time period; and San Francisco, California has seen an increase of 364 percent.

The top ten list for nuisance flooding includes: Annapolis, Maryland; Baltimore, Maryland; Atlantic City, NJ; Philadelphia, PA; Sandy Hook, NJ; Port Isobel, TX; Charleston, SC; Washington, DC; San Francisco, CA; and Norfolk, VA.

"Achieving resilience requires understanding environmental threats and vulnerabilities to combat issues like sea level rise," said Holly Bamford, Ph.D., NOAA assistant administrator of the National Ocean Service. "The nuisance flood study provides the kind of actionable environmental intelligence that can guide coastal resilience efforts."

"As relative sea level increases, it no longer takes a strong storm or a hurricane to cause flooding," said William Sweet, Ph.D., oceanographer at NOAA's Center for Operational Oceanographic Products and Services (CO-OPS). "Flooding now occurs with high tides in many locations due to climate-related sea level rise, land subsidence and the loss of natural barriers. The effects of rising sea levels along most of the continental U.S. coastline are only going to become more noticeable and much more severe in the coming decades, probably more so than any other climate-change related factor."

CO-OPS researchers analyzed data collected from 45 NOAA water level gauges with long data records from around the country. This data was compared to reports of the number of days of nuisance flooding.

How extensive nuisance flooding becomes depends on various factors, including local topography and land cover. For the purpose of the study, the researchers defined nuisance flooding as a daily rise in water level above the minor flooding threshold set locally by NOAA's National Weather Service. They focused on coastal areas at or below these levels that are especially susceptible to flooding.

According to the team, the impacts of nuisance flooding will be further intensified by any acceleration in sea level rise. The rise in sea level will also reduce the time between flood events.

Coastal communities can use the data to assess flooding risk, develop strategies for mitigating and adapting to the effects of sea level rise, and improve coastal resiliency in the face of climate- and weather-induced changes. Reported by redOrbit 1 day ago.

The Export-Import Bank Debate: Tempest in the Tea Party Pot

$
0
0
The charter of the Export-Import Bank (Ex-Im Bank or Bank) must be reauthorized by the end of September. Given the current heated debate it is likely that its fate will not be determined until the 11th hour.

What is going on right now is essentially a confrontation between ideology and methodology. The ideology is that of the Tea Party and conservative Republicans who insist the government should not be interfering in the free market system. The methodology is the work of the Ex-Im Bank in providing loans, loan guarantees and credit insurance to help foreign buyers purchase American products and services.

What makes this debate rather unusual is that it basically pits Republican against Republican. Lining up on the "social conservative" Republican side are groups such as Heritage Action, the Club for Growth and FreedomWorks. Lining up on the "business" Republican side are groups such as the National Association of Manufacturers, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the Aerospace Industry Association.

Each of the conservative groups has their designated spokespersons and talking points. But, the most influential person is Rep. Jeb Hensarling (R-TX) who chairs the House Financial Services Committee which oversees the Bank's charter.

In a speech to the Heritage Foundation regarding the Bank, Rep. Hensarling declared, "Its demise would clearly be one of the few achievable victories for the Main Street competitive economy left in this Congress. I believe it is a defining issue for our party and our movement."

On the flip side of the argument, as Holly Yeager reports in the Washington Post, Ned Monroe, political strategist for NAM asserted, "This is not about our legislative opponents. This is a jobs issue."

Those two differing perspectives frame this matter well: "a defining issue for our party and our movement" versus a "jobs issue." In this sluggish economy which continues to struggle to create jobs - especially good paying ones - we find the jobs positioning more persuasive. Our assessment of the need for the Ex-Im Bank is strengthened as we look at some of the other assertions and facts surrounding the debate.

The most common charge against the existence of the Bank is that it is an example of "crony capitalism" giving preferred treatment to large corporations such as Boeing, GE and Caterpillar thus not letting the free market work its magic.

This charge might carry some weight if there were such a thing as the free market in the world market place. Unfortunately, the only place where that market exists is in the space between some folks' ears.

The fact is that 59 other countries, including major ones like China, France and Russia, provide export financing assistance. For the United States not to do so, would put American firms wanting to do business internationally at a competitive disadvantage.

It is true that the bulk of the Bank's lending assistance in terms of dollars goes to large companies (around 80 percent). But, the preponderance of the clients (90 percent) served are smaller businesses.

Another criticism of the Bank is that it's made some bad loans to outfits like Enron and Solyndra. That's absolutely true. But, they also have had a very low default rate of only one percent since 2006. That compares quite favorably to the default rate of private sector banks in the same time period.

A third criticism of the Bank is that it only affects about 2 percent of American exports and that if it went out of existence it would not have a dramatic impact on American exporting. That is true in the larger scheme of things and we are certain that the mega-corporations would find other sources for their financial assistance.

On the other hand, we believe the Bank's demise would have a direct effect on the small businesses and workers in those companies that benefit from the Bank's lending. This brings us to the most compelling argument for why the Export-Import Bank should be reauthorized.

That is the business case for it which is as follows: The Bank has a very small operating budget. The Bank pays for itself. The Bank generates profits for the U.S. Treasury. The Bank helps numerous American companies. Those companies create American jobs.

Here are the specifics. In 2013, the Ex-Im Bank:
· authorized27.3 billion in direct loans, loan guarantees and credit insurance

· had an operating budget of90M paid for completely by customer fees and interestcontributed $1.1 billion to the Treasury· approved a record high 3,413 small business authorizations - 625 of those businesses were first time users

· estimates that it helped support 205,000 American jobs
In sum, the Export-Import Bank is a government program that works and more importantly costs the taxpayers nothing. To sacrifice the Bank on the altar of ideology makes little sense. Instead, it should be held up as an exemplar of how the government can operate in a business-like manner and make a difference in the American economy.

That's not to say the Bank is perfect and cannot do things better. Rep. John Campbell (R-CA) has drafted a "third option" path for legislation reauthorizing the Bank for three years with reforms. Those reforms would include measures to: reduce U.S. taxpayer exposure, improve risk management, and ensure the Bank remains the lender of last resort.

As might be expected, the conservative Republicans are resistant to even considering reform of the Bank while the progressives are embracing the need for it.

Writing in U.S. News.com, Nancy Pfotenhauer, president of Media Speaks and former director of the Washington office of Koch Industries asserts, "Reform isn't possible with Ex-Im because by definition it distorts the free market and... favors some lucky, well-connected companies over others."

In contrast, Diana Carew, of the Progressive Policy Institute and a former employee of the Bank in a blog for The Hill says, "A third option has the power to make Ex-Im Bank better, by enabling reforms to fulfill its mission more effectively. Such reforms would enhance the global competitiveness of U.S. companies, not take it away."

We don't think reform is impossible. In fact, the very existence of the Export -Import Bank proves that it is possible.

The Bank was established in 1934 during the New Deal administration of Franklin Delano Roosevelt to help American companies do business around the world and to compete more effectively during the Great Depression. Eighty years later, the global economy is even more competitive and the United States is still struggling to emerge from the Great Recession.

We need the Export-Import Bank now more than ever as one of the resources to drive business development and job creation by American companies. It is the time to reform and strengthen this Bank, not to kill it.

(In the interests of full disclosure, Frank Islam served on the Advisory Committee for the Export Import Bank for one year and Ed Crego's daughter is employed by Boeing.)

Standup is a great way to process bad things that happen to you. I love filling a routine with ideas and mini-punchlines

Smashing my arm jumping off Worthing pier was definitely one of the best things that happened to my career. I say career standup is more of a hobby that got out of hand. But it was the first time that I started writing about something personal to me.

Dont get me wrong, I would much rather the accident hadnt happened, but in terms of generating material it was very useful. Maybe it was the fact that I sort of switched my brain off for six weeks to recover. Maybe its because the ingredients of the accident were so comic (Bird Man competition/homemade helicopter/rescued by a man dressed as Rambo). Maybe its because it forced me to start writing about my own experiences, rather than generic stuff. Im lucky that I do this job I can process bad things that happen to me through my work.Continue reading... Reported by guardian.co.uk 3 hours ago.
