Band Aid 30: teen star + Bono + drummer = Bob’s your uncle

$

The faces of Band Aid have changed in each of the four versions but the winning formula has been the same for 30 years

• Read Stuart Jeffries’ anotated version of the new lyrics to Do The Know It’s Christmas

Perhaps every generation gets the charity record it deserves, in which case we should feel very sorry indeed for those who came of musical age in 1989. Their version of Band Aid, overseen by the Stock, Aitken and Waterman production team, featured a lineup who could baffle a crack pop investigations team 25 years on: D Mob! Deuce! Big Fun! Glen Goldsmith! By contrast, this year’s version seems a model of taste, restraint and talent, though we can’t know which of its stars will still be remembered in 25 years’ time. It has been the misfortune of every Band Aid reconfiguration (and, indeed, every British charity record) to seem a little underpowered compared with that first Band Aid lineup. Partly, that is because no one had ever seen so many stars in one recording studio at the same time, but mainly it is because the British pop firmament burned particularly bright in the mid-80s. Whatever you might think about their levels of talent, the likes of Duran Duran, George Michael, Spandau Ballet, Boy George, Holly Johnson and Marilyn brought a Day-Glo, unselfconscious starriness to the first Band Aid that has been impossible to repeat. That doesn’t mean, though, that we can’t spot themes running through the lineups of that version and the new one.

‘Side Show’ Theater Review: Bill Condon Gives Twin Dreamgirls Another Shot at Stardom

$

Broadway has yet another new star from Hollywood, but this time he's not an actor. Film director-writer Bill Condon makes his New York stage debut with a smashing revival of “Side Show,” which opened Monday at the St. James Theatre. Condon shows musical-theater veterans how it's supposed to be done. Not that the track record for movie makers working on the musical stage has been a good one: Martin Scorsese famously crashed with “The Act,” and Gower Champion had to be brought in to save the Liza Minnelli show.

Condon's success is a double triumph, actually. He has also retooled Bill Russell's original book for “Side Show,” Condon being credited with “additional book material,” and brought much greater focus and emotional clarity to the story of conjoined twins, based on the real-life Hilton sisters, who went from a carnival “freak show” to being vaudeville's highest paid stars in the 1920s.

*See photos:* 'American Horror Story' to 'True Detective': 8 Anthology Series That Are Changing TV (Photos)

In the new “Side Show,” the twins are more clearly the opposite sides of the same showbiz diva: Violet Hilton (Erin Davie) projects the vulnerable persona that audiences adore, meanwhile Daisy Hilton (Emily Padgett) has the grit necessary to make it to the top. The twins’ three love interests — three, count ‘em — are now more obvious in their motivations. For those who know the 1997 production, it's best not to know the new twists in character, which won't be disclosed here. But Condon achieves something that David Thompson's book for “The Scottsboro Boys,” another backstage story of discrimination, does not: Condon makes us complicit in that discrimination. David St. Louis’ strong voice turns Jake's “You Should Be Loved” into a heart-rending showstopper. Matthew Hydzik's agreeable Buddy withholds his own secret of lowly outsider status. The most significant change, however, effects the twins’ handler Terry, played with caddish charm by Ryan Silverman. He harbors an ultimate dream, something that almost every theatergoer will also want for these two women. Yet, in the end, Daisy and Violet reject that goal.

*Also read:* ‘The River’ Theater Review: Hugh Jackman Gives a Lesson in Fly-Fishing

Back in 1998, the Tonys nominated the two actors playing Daisy and Violet, but gave them only one nomination to share. It's a credit to Condon, Davie, and Padgett that the Tonys probably won't repeat that mistake; these are two utterly different, equally riveting performances, and Davie and Padgett take divergent paths to win our empathy.

Condon pulls off another master stroke that intensifies our identification and desire. The 1997 production took a bare-bones “Elephant Man” approach to depict the side-show attractions, from the lizard man to the geek, leaving the audience to use its imagination. Condon's extensive design team (Paul Tazewell, Dave Elsey, Lou Elsey, Charles G. LaPointe, Cookie Jordan) gives full reality to those unique looks. We are meant to see them as freaks, the Hilton twins included. Later in the show, however, Condon radically ups Daisy and Violet's glam quotient: They're beautiful and sexy, they're stars and we, too, like Terry and Buddy, learn to desire them. It's a Cinderella story, but with more than one twist to come.

*Also read:* ‘Sticks and Bones’ Theater Review: Holly Hunter and Bill Pullman Tackle Ozzie and Harriet

Kudos also go to set designer David Rockwell and lighting designers Jules Fisher and Peggy Eisenhauer who create a world that goes from tacky to deco to expressionistic.

Condon has borrowed a few concepts — a flashback to the twins’ Dickensian upbringing recalls “Sweeney Todd,” a musical number projecting their three-way sex life if one of them marries owes much to the Loveland sequence from “Follies” — but he has borrowed from the best.

Henry Krieger's songs, a few of them new, never sounded this good. The new arrangements (Sam Davis) and orchestrations (Harold Wheeler) eschew the 1997 soft-rock sound, which jarred with the Tin Pan Alley pastiche. Gone also is much of the recitative, which, as Stephen Sondheim once put it, can have the effect of molasses poured over a score. Krieger's plaintive melodies now have their own space in which to shimmer. Not fixed, unfortunately, are some of Russell's more pedestrian lyrics, which bring ordinary rhymes to some very extraordinary emotions.

But those looking for perfection in the arts should stay home and read Yeats. “Side Show” now takes its place in the pantheon of great American musicals.

15 Stores That Will Open On Thanksgiving

$

0
For years, the holiday shopping season started the day after Thanksgiving on "Black Friday," but retailers hungry for sales are pushing the frenzy up one day.

At this rate, Thanksgiving will soon be better known as Black Thursday.

Not all stores are willing to open on Thanksgiving, many say they want to give their workers the day off. And three states - Massachusetts, Maine and Rhode Island -- ban stores from opening on the holiday.

Still, as more of us look online for discounts, brick-and-mortar stores are trying hard to give people a reason to go outside and shop. The retailers say they're simply giving shoppers more of what they want.

“It’s a sign of desperation,” Howard Davidowitz, a retail analyst and consultant, told The Huffington Post. “In order to take business from someone else, you’ve got to create a sense of urgency, got to have more sales, got to have more, earlier door-busters.”

Here are some of the big stores offering Black Friday deals on Thanksgiving:
*1. Walmart*

*Opens at 6 p.m. on Thanksgiving.* During a Tuesday call with reporters to unveil Walmart's Black Friday sales plan, Duncan MacNaughton, chief merchandising officer at Walmart U.S., said:
“Black Friday is no longer an event for customers who wake up at the crack of dawn to get good deals.”

*2. Kmart*

*Opens at 6 p.m. on Thanksgiving.* Leena Munjal, senior vice president at parent company Sears Holding Corp., said in a statement:
“This holiday season is all about giving more to our members and because many like to start shopping well before Black Friday, we’re excited to open our doors early on Thanksgiving and offer other early access opportunities for them to shop and save.”
*3. Sears*

*Opens at 6 p.m. on Thanksgiving*, along with its sister-store Kmart. Adding to her statement, Munjal said:"I'd also like to especially thank our seasonal associates and those who have volunteered to share part of the day serving our members on Thanksgiving."

*4. Macy's*

*Opens at 6 p.m. on Thanksgiving*, earlier than ever. Holly Thomas, a spokeswoman, told HuffPost:
"We work diligently to staff Thanksgiving with associates who volunteer to work and doing so means that our people are able to make their own decisions about how they contribute to our most important and busiest weekend of the year. We also heard last year from many associates who appreciated the opportunity to work on Thanksgiving so they could have time off on Black Friday. Additionally, associates who work an opening shift on Thanksgiving will be compensated with incentive pay."
*5. J.C. Penney *

*Opens at 5 p.m. on Thanksgiving.* The struggling department store will open three years earlier than last year. Spokesman Joey Thomas told HuffPost:
In keeping with the spirit of the holiday, we have many exciting activities and giveaways planned to show just how much we appreciate the hard work and dedication of our associates. Activities and giveaways include swag bags full of goodies, round-the-clock food to keep associates fueled for delivering excellent customer service, pep rallies to drive excitement and energy through the early morning hours of Black Friday, and drawings for fun prizes.
*6. Target*

*Opens at 6 p.m. on Thanksgiving*, but Black Friday deals started on Nov. 10. In a statement, Kathee Tesija, chief merchandising and supply chain officer, said:
“We know our guests are pulled in a million different directions as the holidays get underway, so we’re helping them save time and money by offering more access to Black Friday deals.”
*7. Kohl's*

*Opens at 6 p.m. on Thanksgiving.* Kevin Mansell, the big-box store’s chairman, chief executive and president, said in a statement:
“Kohl’s will be the most compelling shopping destination for the entire family this holiday season with our strong portfolio of sought-after national and private brands, our extensive online assortment and a deep list of exciting products that are new to Kohl’s this year.”
*8. Best Buy*

*Opens at 5 p.m. on Thanksgiving.* In a lengthy statement announcing the hours, the company wrote:
“While we recognize the decision to open on Thanksgiving affects Best Buy employees, customers have made it clear that many of them want to begin shopping on Thanksgiving evening. In recent years, millions of Americans have shopped on Thanksgiving, and our store associates are excited and prepared to fulfill their holiday wish lists. Most thanksgiving evening shifts are filled by employees who volunteer to work. All hourly store employees who work on Thanksgiving will, of course, receive holiday pay.”
*9. Staples*

*Opens at 6 p.m. on Thanksgiving* as part of a week of Black Friday deals. Alison Corcoran, senior vice president of North American stores and online marketing, said in a statement:
“At Staples, we’re offering more savings throughout November with our first-ever Week of Black Friday for Business plus amazing deals the week of Black Friday through Cyber Monday. We also make less stress happen this holiday season with easy ways to shop in store, online and via mobile.”
*10. Sports Authority*

*Opens 6 p.m. on Thanksgiving*, with coupons and hours already circulating in local catalogs. CEO Michael E. Foss said in a statement:
“Every Black Friday, we kick off the holiday season by offering our customers the best deals of the year. For the second year in a row, our customers can conveniently shop more than a hundred Black Friday Doorbusters on footwear, apparel, team sports, fitness equipment, golf gear and more starting at 6pm on Thanksgiving Day.”
*11. Toys R Us*

*Opens at 5 p.m. on Thanksgiving*. Adrienne O’Hara, a spokesperson for Toys R Us, told HuffPost:
“We have so much excitement leading up to Thanksgiving and Black Friday. Employees are really excited, it’s an event.”
*12. Big Lots*

*Opens at 7 a.m. on Thanksgiving*. In a statement, the home goods giant said:
“Big Lots listens to its customers, and based on their feedback, Big Lots stores have been open on Thanksgiving for over 20 years. This year is no different.”
*13. RadioShack*

*Open from 8 a.m. to noon on Thanksgiving*, and reopens at 5 p.m. The midday break came after the employees complained about having to fill shifts from 8 a.m. to midnight. Last Monday, RadioShack spokeswoman Andrea McCauley told CNBC:
“Given the customer demand for store hours on Thanksgiving last year, we made the decision to open on Thanksgiving. It gives us the opportunity to stay competitive.” *14. Office Max & 15. Office Depot *

*Open from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Thanksgiving. * Troy Rice, executive vice president of retail for Office Depot, said in a statement:
“We know our customers want to make the most of their Thanksgiving holiday while also getting a head start on their shopping lists. That’s why we are so dedicated to providing customers with the extended store hours they want, along with great deals on some of the most highly sought-after gifts they need, both in stores and online.”

Best Friends Animal Society Offers Tips to Keep Your Pets Safe This Holiday Season

Keeping the four-legged members of your family happy during the holidays can be as simple as following a few safety precautions.

(PRWEB) November 18, 2014

The hustle and bustle of the holidays can have an impact on everyone in the household, including your pets. Many traditions such as foods, decorations and plants that may seem harmless can be dangerous and even life-threatening to your pets.

“It’s important to pay special attention to your pets over the holidays because there are so many things they are exposed to that can cause trouble,” said Michael Dix, DVM and medical director of Best Friends Animal Society. “Our pets are naturally curious and love new things. The holidays provide a whole new world for them to explore.”

Best Friends Animal Society, a national animal welfare organization, offers the following tips to keep your dogs and cats safe during the holiday season:· An active home full of holiday guests can increase the chance of your pets becoming loose, so it’s important that your pet is has an identification tag with current contact information.
· Be aware that increased visitors and lights can cause stress.
· As your home fills with guests and parties, maintain a normal schedule of walks, treats, and alone time, as well as providing a warm, safe, quiet place that can act as a retreat.
· Curb the tendency to give your dog or cats human food. Any change in your pets diet may give them indigestion, diarrhea or worse. Foods that people should avoid giving their pets include chocolate, grapes, onions, poultry bones, eggnog and fruitcake. Call your veterinarian with any questions about what food may be toxic to your pet.
· Holiday plants such as lilies, holly, mistletoe and poinsettias are known to be toxic to pets and should be kept out of reach.
· The water your live Christmas tree sits in is a breeding ground for bacteria and can be extremely harmful. Keep the water covered at all times with a thick skirt.
· Tape electrical cords safely to the wall and make sure that all electrical connections, batteries, and outlets are concealed.
· Tinsel, ribbon, metal hooks, and glass can obstruct or perforate the intestine if ingested. Use alternatives such as paper or plastic ornaments with plastic hooks and hang dangerous decorations out of reach from your pet.
· Quickly dispose of wrapping paper, packages, and bows after opening presents and put children’s toys out of reach of pets after playtime to avoid accidental ingestion by pets.

Some symptoms that your pet has become ill and should be taken to a veterinarian quickly include prolonged vomiting (more than three times in a row), dry heaves, a distended abdomen, sudden weakness or inability to stand, respiratory distress, change in gum color and/or seizures.

“Better to err on the side of caution and call your veterinary or emergency hospital if there are concerns that your pet needs to be seen immediately,” Dix said.

One Of The NBA's Best Dunkers Describes What It's Like To Dunk In Games

One Of The NBA's Best Dunkers Describes What It's Like To Dunk In Games The Toronto Raptors' Terrence Ross has earned his reputation as one of the NBA's best dunkers.

He's a high-flying wing with a 38-inch vertical who won the 2013 dunk contest, and has put several players on highlight reels.

Talking to Raptors reporter Holly MacKenzie, Ross gave a zen-like description of what it's like to dunk in the game.

“You’re zoned out. You never really hear [the crowd], it happens so fast. It’s something you do and then you’re like, ‘Yeah okay, cool. I just dunked. Got a little dunk. That’s nice,’ but after that it’s whatever.

“You can’t explain it,” a chuckling Ross continued. “It’s more emotion, like a habit. It’s just something that kind of happens. It’s not like I plan on going up and doing whatever I do.”

In the interview, Ross claims that his vicious dunk on Kenneth Faried last season was not high on his list of favorite dunks. Instead, he claims that his recent alley-oop finish against the Utah Jazz was his favorite dunk because, "I was honestly just trying to like lay it up or shoot it in, or do whatever, but I got so close to the rim I actually dunked it. It was one of my hardest dunks I've ever done."

He dunked this:

Yeah, okay, cool. Got a nice little dunk.

‘By the Water’ Theater Review: Superstorm Sandy Returns, This Time with Glimpses of Arthur Miller

$
0
0
If Arthur Miller had lived to witness and write about Superstorm Sandy, his play might be very much like Sharyn Rothstein's “By the Water,” which opened Tuesday at MTC's City Center space in New York.

Both Miller and newcomer Rothstein can be categorized as writing kitchen-sink dramas but for the fact that their themes and the emotions unleashed are anything but commonplace. Besides, it's doubtful the kitchen sink still functions in the devastated home of Marty and Mary Murphy.

*See photos:* 9 of Elaine Stritch's Most Memorable Roles (Photos)

Rothstein's two memorable characters are played with grace and naturalism by Vyto Ruginis and Deirdre O'Connell. They are survivors of the storm on Staten Island, but their house is very much a shambles and most of their neighbors are ready to move — if they can all get together to agree on taking that government bailout. Marty hates the word “bailout,” he's that kind of guy, and as you can see we're already we're in the land of Arthur Miller where the American Dream is going to take another drubbing.

*Also read:* ‘Side Show’ Theater Review: Bill Condon Gives Twin Dreamgirls Another Shot at Stardom

Rothstein doesn't wield as big a paddle as the moralistic Miller, neither does she use the one she's got to whip Marty the way Miller does Joe Keller in “All My Sons.” Still, there's more than a little of Joe in Marty. Given the chance, he might have been a Joe; then again, Marty owns a grocery store, not a munitions factory. While Rothstein doesn't make her character guilty of major sins against humanity, he's nonetheless a schemer and a cheat and not the erstwhile pillar of his devastated community that he pretends to be.

*Also read:* 'Punk Rock' Theater Review: Simon Stephens' New Play Is Much More Than a 'Curious Incident'

To Rothstein's credit, the absorbing story she tells deserves to be more than its current one act. The new legit formula of one act in 95 minutes is not enough to cover the tragedy of the Murphy family and their neighbors. The exposition is never forced and the dialogue is often funny in a non-sitcom way, but sometimes the plot points arrive a little too fast and there isn't time to absorb their impact before another one hits you.

Hal Brooks directs a superb ensemble that never condescends to their bridge-and-tunnel characters but rather imbues them with nuance and dignity. In addition to Ruginis and O'Connell, the actors include Quincy Dunn-Baker, Tom Pelphrey, Ethan Phillips, Charlotte Maier, and Cassie Beck.
