Twenty Percent Chance of Snow Thursday Night For Holly Springs Patch Holly Springs-Hickory Flat, GA --

High temps in the 60s won't last, as Wednesday ushers in a freeze watch covering north Georgia, including Holly Springs and Cherokee County.

In effect late Wednesday night through early Thursday morning, it warns of lows in the mid 20s to mid 30s, which could damage vegetation, according to the National Weather Service.

Wednesday's high temp is expected to reach 61, but Thursday night holds a slight chance of rain and snow.

NWS gives Holly Springs a 20 percent chance of snow Thursday night, according to the forecast, which puts the low around 35.

NWS predicts the snow will fall mostly after midnight while Friday will bring a chance of snow and sleet before 2 p.m., which will later change over to rain.

No accumulations are expected, but the higher elevations could see some dusting.

Clouds and the wet stuff will stick around throughout the weekend, with highs expected to reach the mid 50s.

Roke parents hold anti-academy protest outside Harris Federation offices

Roke parents hold anti-academy protest outside Harris Federation offices This is Croydon --

ROKE Primary School parents ramped up the pressure on Tuesday afternoon with a rally outside the proposed academy sponsor's headquarters in central Croydon.

More than 30 parents and children demonstrated outside the Harris Federation's offices in Norfolk House, Wellesley Road, against the Government's plans for their Kenley school.

Supported by representatives from the local branch of the National Union of Teachers and the Anti-Academies Alliance, protesters brandished banners with messages including "Our results are good" and "Parents have no voice".

A formal consultation on the Government's plans, which were triggered by a bad Ofsted report last year, is due to close on March 28.

Joanna Hearn, from Kenley, who has two sons aged three and five at Roke, said: "We hope that they will listen because they claim that there is a consultation, so if there is we hope they will understand the strength of our feelings."

The 38-year-old added: "I do not believe that our school is failing, and Harris claims to be a charity so they should put their resources where they are most needed.

"We would like them to go to a failing school and do good there."

No one from Harris came out to address the crowd, but protester Becky Carrier was allowed inside the building, where she handed over posters.

Harris representatives – including founder Lord Harris of Peckham, chief executive Sir Daniel Moynihan, and head of primary education Sir Robin Bosher – have held open meetings with parents to discuss how they would run the school.

Protester Jane Manning, whose six-year-old daughter attends Roke, echoed other parents' comments that the school does not need rescuing.

The 45-year-old said: "[My daughter] had been to another school [Beulah Junior], and since a year of her coming to Roke she has been well above that level.

"She has been getting ten-letter-word spellings – gymnastics, for example. I think she has got a good teacher and had a good teacher last year.

"I will be panicking if it becomes an academy – I reckon they would bring in all their own teachers and get rid of the ones that they have got.

"There are plenty of schools out there that need their [Harris'] help."

Holly Lloyd, aged eight, who is in Year 4 at Roke, said she worried Harris would "change some of the great things about the school".

She added: "They are going to change the uniform and the logo and I don't see what is wrong with them."

Her mum Claire Lloyd said she was worried her autistic son Jack, 4, would get less special educational support under Harris.

But Sir Robin Bosher has said special educational needs provision would not be changed as long as it was effective.

He told one parent at a public meeting: "If it is effective and your little boy is making the best progress he can then, that will stay just as it is."

The campaigners have also instructed a lawyer to look at challenging the Government's plans in the courts.

The Department for Education told the Advertiser last week it wanted to "help under-performing schools to improve".

It would "carefully consider" consultation responses, a spokesman added. Reported by This is 7 hours ago.

Pride put back into Humberside Police by retiring chief constable

Pride put back into Humberside Police by retiring chief constable This is Scunthorpe --

MARCH 2005 was a time of change for Humberside Police. Confidence and satisfaction in the force was at an all-time low. The force was faced with national criticism after an investigation revealed its failures that allowed Ian Huntley to get a caretaker's job in Soham, Cambridgeshire, where he murdered 10-year-olds Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman in 2002.

It was also a time that Tim Hollis took over as Chief Constable of Humberside Police.

Eight years on Mr Hollis is stepping down from the role, proud of his force's achievements in restoring public satisfaction and confidence.

After serving in the police force for 35-and-a-half years Mr Hollis says "everything must come to an end".

"When I arrived in 2005 there was a number of challenges we faced on performance," he said.

"Our national reputation was damaged because of the Soham murders due to Ian Huntley being from North East Lincolnshire and there was issues around sharing our information with other forces.

"Our public confidence and satisfaction was really low.

"There were also issues around incident response and call handling and crime levels.

"But eight years later I feel that I have helped put the pride back in the force both locally and nationally, restored confidence and left the force in fine fettle.

"Collectively we have helped turned the force around."

Mr Hollis said this was achieved through working with the public, officers, Police Authority and strong working partnerships.

"When I came in I identified what sequence we needed to carry out work and brought a clarity to what needed to be achieved," he said.

"We have always had strong working relationships with the four local authorities, the CPS, probation and health services who have all certainly played their part."

One of Mr Hollis' last decisions as Chief Constable was axing the Humberside Police mounted section.

He said that finance and budget cuts is the biggest thing facing the force in the future.

"There is still sums of money that need to come out of the policing budget due to Government budget requirements and the next round of cuts will be very challenging," he said.

"But the force has good foundations to build from and a workforce that is proud to be working for Humberside Police.

"The four forces in Yorkshire and Humberside have collaborated a number of services already that have proved to be cost effective."

The way policing is governed in Humberside has changed significantly, with the region's first Police and Crime Commissioner, Matthew Grove, elected to the post in November.

Mr Hollis conceded it had been a busy time for Mr Grove since taking over – including appointing his successor Justine Curran.

Ms Curran was appointed chief constable for Tayside in August 2009, having previously served as deputy chief constable.

Speaking of his successor, Mr Hollis said: "She has a very good policing background and been a Chief Constable in Tayside for four years so has had a good practical policing knowledge.

"We have had a couple of days where we have talked things through but after eight years there is certainly a lot to talk about.

"Mr Grove has had a lot to take on having gone through the challenges of an election that was certainly very high profile in Humberside.

"He has set the policing plan, consulting with the public on that, had to set the budget as well as select a new Chief so he has certainly had a lot to do."

Mr Hollis has already taken up the role of honorary colonel of the Army Cadet Force for South Yorkshire & Humberside, something he said would take him full circle.

Prior to serving 35-and-a-half years in the police force, Mr Hollis served three years in the army.

He said the role would allow him to keep a connection with Humberside, as well as continuing to live in the area.

Initially his time as Chief came to an end after five years in 2010, but he extended it for another three years, bringing him to March 2013.

However, he felt like now the time was right to leave.

"I have had a really good run which is why it is quite an easy time to leave."

When asked what he would miss from the role Mr Hollis was clear in his answer.

"The Humberside Police Challenge is a fantastic thing that brings together all of the local community," he said.

"This year is the 20th anniversary of the challenge and I will miss being there for the presentation of the awards as it is always something I have worked closely with and supported." Reported by This is 3 hours ago.

Dove Award-Winning Musician Coming to Holly Springs Patch Holly Springs-Hickory Flat, GA --

Why does Church of Messiah member Joe Mueller think you should attend the congregation's Phil Keaggy and Casper McCloud concert on April 12?

"Phil and Casper are some of the best guitarists in the world," Mueller says.

In 1988, Keaggy won his first Dove Award for his instrumental album, "The Wind and the Wheat." In 1992 he won again for "Beyond Nature," and has been voted a top finger-style guitarist three years in a row by Guitar Player Magazine.

Meanwhile, McCloud, pastor of Upper Room Fellowship which meets at the church, is an accomplished musician who produced two albums with Atlantic Records and portrayed John Lennon on Broadway.

You can read more about McCloud, his friendship with Keaggy, what led him to the Holly Springs area and his spiritual path in "Music With a Message," which appeared on Canton Patch in 2011.

The concert is Friday, April 12, at 7 p.m. at Church of Messiah, 415 Charles Cox Drive. The concert is free, but a $10 offering is suggested. Reported by Patch 22 hours ago.

TELL US: What are your best tips for saving electricity? Patch Holly Springs-Hickory Flat, GA --

Allyson Schmutter, spokesperson for the national nonprofit Alliance to Save Energy, offers these five tips for saving energy and money:

*1. Unplug All Those Devices: *Believe it or not, many devices still consume energy even when turned off. The typical culprits are televisions and cable boxes, or anything that stays lit with an LED or standby light even when turned off. Schmutter says those devices can suck a month’s worth of electricity from your home each year.

*2. Change Your Bulbs: *If you haven't already switched your incandescent bulbs out for more energy-efficient options, now's the time to do it. You'll save 75 percent by switching to CFL bulbs. Not sold on CFLs? Take a look at this light bulb checklist for more ideas.

The Home Depot on Holly Springs Parkway north of Sixes Road has a wide variety of energy efficient light bulbs.

*3. Cook Up Some Energy Savings:* Did you know matching your pan to the burner can actually save energy? For example, experts estimate that 40 percent of energy is lost when you use a 6-inch pan on an 8-inch burner.

Another way to save energy in the kitchen is to keep your refrigerator between 37° to 40°F and your freezer at 5°F, and allow hot food to cool before putting it in the refrigerator. The folks at Edison Electric Institute have a thorough list of suggestions for optimizing your fridge's efficiency, including locating it away from direct sunlight when possible. Every little bit helps!

*4. Wash Your Clothes in Cold Water: *Washing clothes in cold water is a great electricity saver, Schmutter says. “When you’re thinking about savings, you spend the most money washing clothes in hot water because 90 percent of that energy goes to heating the water.”

Detergents and washing machines are now more efficient than ever, so hot water really isn’t all that necessary anymore. Look for detergents made specifically for washing in cold water, Schmutter suggests.

*5. Research Your Appliances: *Home energy management systems now come with appliances like dishwashers, washing machines and dryers, Schmutter says. When you’re in the market for something new, be sure it’s energy-efficient.

Along with The Home Depot in Holly Springs, Sears Hometown Store in Canton also offers a good selection on energy efficient washers, dryers and dishwashers.

Forsyth Deputy Injured in Cherokee Single-Car Crash Patch Holly Springs-Hickory Flat, GA --

A Forsyth County Sheriff's Office deputy was taken to an area hospital Saturday morning following a car accident in northeastern Cherokee County, according to authorities.

Deputy Sheriff Michael Cartledge was driving his patrol car, a 2008 Dodge Charger, east on Georgia Highway 369 near Julius Bridge Road near the Free Home community around 7:30 a.m. when the single-car crash happened, according to a sheriff's office press release.

It appears his vehicle hydroplaned on Highway 369 and struck several trees. Cartledge was transported by Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services to North Fulton Hospital in Roswell by ambulance with non-life-threatening injuries.

"All I've heard so far is that he should be released today [Saturday] and has no broken bones," said Deputy Courtney Beal Spriggs, public information officer for the FCSO.

Deputy Cartledge was wearing his seatbelt. The Cherokee Sheriff’s Office is investigating the crash.
