40 mph Wind Gusts Today, Freezing Temperatures Tonight in Holly Springs Patch Holly Springs-Hickory Flat, GA --

Holly Springs and Hickory Flat are under a wind advisory until 6 p.m. today. But though the winds will slow, the weather will only get colder as a freeze warning goes into effect at 2 a.m. Tuesday.

The National Weather Service has issued the freeze warning and wind advisory for all of North and Central Georgia. Winds are out of the west at 15-25 mph, with gusts up to 40 mph.

These winds could knock medium to large limbs from trees and even blow down weak or drought stressed trees.

Temperatures overnight and early Tuesday will be in the middle to upper 20s in the higher elevations, but elsewhere in the lower 30s. The freeze warning is in effect from 2-10 a.m. Tuesday morning.

Bundle the kids up for school – the freeze watch starts at 2 a.m. Tuesday, but it doesn't end until 10 a.m.

Today's forecast calls for it to be mostly cloudy with a high of 44. The overnight low will be 29.

The freezing temperatures will impact early budding and flowering vegetation. Strong winds can make driving difficult. Boats, too, should exercise extra caution, as rough chop could occur on area lakes.

Temperatures on this spring morning will be in the upper 20s to lower 30s.

"Those with agricultural interests in the watch area should make preparations to protect sensitive vegetation and young trees," the National Weather Service advises. Reported by Patch 4 days ago.

Cherokee County Unemployment Rate Falls to 6.9% Patch Holly Springs-Hickory Flat, GA --

Cherokee County's unemployment rate continued its downward trend last month.

The rate in February dropped to 6.9 percent, down a hair from 7.1 percent in January and 7.8 in February 2012.

Out of the county's 115,182 workers, 7,914 went without jobs last month, which is less than were counted as unemployed in January and February 2012. Cherokee's rate is the second lowest in the region, just behind Forsyth's rate of 6.4 percent.

Other surrounding counties in the metro Atlanta area include:

*County                Rate*
Bartow                 9.0%
*Cherokee              6.9*
Cobb                    7.4
Douglas                8.8
Forsyth                 6.4
Fulton                   8.9
Paulding                7.8
Metro Atlanta         8.3

Georgia                 8.6

Cherokee County will be the location of two upcoming job fairs to help residents in need of work.

Goodwill of North Georgia's location on Highway 92 will hold a Woodstock Recruitment Fair at 10 a.m. Friday March 29.

There will be permanent full-time positions available for gardeners, crew leaders, irrigation technicians and irrigation laborers. Jobs will be located in Cartersville, Cobb County, Doraville, Gwinnett County, Suwanee and Forest Park.

The city of Holly Springs will join forces with the Atlanta Regional Commission and host a job fair in May at the Holly Springs Community Center.

The free job fair will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday May 8. The Atlanta Regional Commission Mobile Career Unit will be on hand to help with your job search.

Metro Atlanta’s unemployment rate declined to 8.3 percent in February, down four-tenths of a percentage point from 8.7 percent in January. The rate was 9.3 percent in February a year ago.

The rate declined because the number of jobs increased and there were fewer new layoffs, which were represented by initial claims for unemployment insurance benefits.

The number of jobs in metro Atlanta increased by 6,400, climbing to 2,369,000 from 2,362,600 in January. Most of the growth came in professional and business services, 5,000, and education and health care, 2,500. Some seasonal jobs were lost in trade, transportation, and warehousing.

Calvin Hill: Budget Gives Over $289 Million in New Funds to Education Patch Holly Springs-Hickory Flat, GA --

More money will be set aside for education funding in the state's fiscal year 2014 budget, according to one Cherokee County state legislator.

State Rep. Calvin Hill (R-Hickory Flat) said on Saturday that with state revenues growing by 3 percent, over $289 million in "new funds" have been assigned to education funding in the upcoming budget.

Hill made the assertion in two town hall meetings he held with State Sen. Brandon Beach (R-Alpharetta). Both men met with residents at the Hickory Flat Public Library and Ball Ground City Hall.

Hill stated House Bill 106 gave $146.5 million to fully fund Quality Basic Education, or QBE, growth from 1.4 percent for over 23,000 students. He also said the state increased equalization grants by $38.3 million to "reflect full funding of the required $474.4 million."

"This is the first year that equalization has been fully funded since 2009," he wrote in a press release.

Beach told residents about the work he'd done in the Georgia Senate on health care reform and preventative medicine practice for doctors, which he said would "reduce the excessive testing now being performed by doctors in fear of lawsuits."

That would eliminate unnecessary tests and could help slow the tide of rising health care and health insurance costs.

When the two legislators went to Ball Ground, they informed the audience of the same topics that were discussed in Hickory Flat. They were peppered with questions on the possibility to replace the bridge along Highway 372 over the Etowah River.

The legislators told the audience that the Georgia Department of Transportation is "moving very rapidly" to complete right-of-way acquisition so they can move forward on the project since funding has already been approved.

Boston Marathon: 2 Local Runners Finished Just Before Blasts

Boston Marathon: 2 Local Runners Finished Just Before Blasts Patch Palmer-Forks, PA --

Amy Gleason and Allison Zimmerman had just crossed the finished line.

Then minutes later, two bombs went off, and the two Forks Township women and their families were running for safety.

"It feels like the marathon was 10 years ago now," Gleason said during a phone interview from her Boston hotel room.

Gleason, running in her third Boston marathon, had finished the race about 20 minutes earlier and was waiting for her friend Allison to complete, which she did seven minutes before the bombs struck, killing at least three and injuring more than 130 people.

"The whole thing is pretty surreal right now," said Zimmerman, who believes she was about 50 yards away from the explosions. "We all paused. Our husbands lifted up the barricades and we shimmied underneath on our bellies."

Gleason added, "That very quickly ruined the marathon for me. I want to leave as soon as possible. This brings back a lot of feelings of fear."

Those fears stem from Gleason's experience as a nurse in New York City on 9/11. Her husband Mike was a New York City police officer.

Mike Gleason said he was about 100 feet away from the explosion Monday.

"The girls had just crossed the finish line," he said. "We went down to meet them with our kids and gave them some water. Then, about 100 yards to my left, I heard the first explosion. There was a big plume of smoke. The second one came 20-30 seconds after."

"I'm thinking, 'two explosions. This isn't a coincidence. This is a terrorist attack,'" he said.

On 9/11, Gleason was mobilized from his unit at 42nd and Broadway to the World Trade Center.

"They hit a populated area and created fear and panic," said Gleason, who retired as an officer in 2010. "If you can't go to a marathon that's been going straight for 117 years because you're fearful, then they have succeeded."

Here are stories of other Lehigh Valley runners:

*J. Jackson Eaton III*, a partner with the Allentown law firm Gross McGinley LLP, is safe after finishing the marathon two minutes before the explosion, according to a Tweet received from the law firm.

"Quite frightening, but we are all safe," Eaton wrote in a message to his colleagues.

*Congregation Keneseth Israel Rabbi Seth Phillips*, 60, of South Whitehall, sent a text that the explosion happened a few minutes after he had finished the marathon. Phillips was not injured, according to an e-mail sent by a synagogue member.

*Lafayette College freshman Andrew Halloran* tweeted that he was OK late Monday afternoon.

*Lehigh Valley Roadrunners *Member Neal Novak emailed Patch that he had word from numerous sources that all club members who ran in the marathon were safe.

Southern Lehigh School Board Secretary *Diana Millman *got a scare when she walked past a television in the school district administration building and saw the news coverage. Her 22-year-old daughter—now a student in Boston—lives on Copley Square right next to the finish line.

Millman tried to reach her daughter by telephone, but had no luck. She then turned to social media and found photos taken at the finish line by her daughter and posted on Instagram. Millman’s daughter, who left the finish line about 15 minutes before the blasts, is safe.

*Christopher Garges *of Coopersburg posted on Facebook that he wasn't hurt. Garges finished the race in less than three hours; the explosions came after the four-hour mark.

On Nazareth Patch's Facebook page, Christine D'Aquila VanderValk said *Lisa Dente*, one of three Nazareth runners who competed, is OK.

Kelley Ann Neal Joseph and Holly Bachman reported that *Jim Rehrig* was also OK. Rehrig had not yet finished the marathon when the first blast was reported at 2:42 p.m., according to www.baa.org. Rehrig was about a half mile from the finish line when the first bomb detonated, Joseph said.

*Amby Burfoot*, 66, of Emmaus, ran on the 45th anniversary of his 1968 Boston Marathon win wearing bib #1968.

Burfoot, an editor at large at Rodale's Runner's World told Runnersworld.com that he was about three-quarters of a mile from the finish line when the explosions occurred:

"We were about to go under the Mass Ave. underpass when suddenly there was congestion in front of us," Burfoot said in an email.

"Soon it became clear it was runners congesting."

"Everyone's cell phones starting going off. I got a call from [my wife] Cristina that the finish line was cleared and the race was over."

Burfoot walked back to his hotel, the story said.   Reported by Patch 18 hours ago.
