Former Holly Springs Councilwoman To Run For Cherokee Commission Chair Patch Woodstock-Towne Lake, GA --

Former Holly Springs City Councilwoman Jacqueline Archer has declared her candidacy to run for the Cherokee County Commission chairperson.

Archer plans to qualify as a Republican and run for the seat.

Archer, who said she's ready to "get to work," added she "looks forward to the opportunity to serve the residents of Cherokee County."

She noted she appreciates the support and encouragement of residents who are already supporting her.

The seat is currently held by incumbent Buzz Ahrens, who has not indicated any plans to run for re-election.

Archer was elected to the Holly Springs City Council in 2001 and served for nearly a decade. She's a current member of the Cherokee County Development Authority, the constitutional authority tasked with bringing new and supporting current businesses in Cherokee County.

She was elected treasurer of the Republican Women of Cherokee County and is also an active member of the Cherokee County Republican Party.

Last year, Archer began championing for the awareness of lung cancer and worked to designate funds to be used for detection, patient advocacy, treatment and educating the public on the disease.

Archer, who never smoked, is a stage 3 lung cancer survivor and lobbied the Georgia General Assembly to establish the Lung Cancer Awareness license plate Georgia residents can purchase to support the Joan Gaeta Lung Cancer Foundation.

Archer added one of her many desires is for "Cherokee County to flourish in a responsible manner, thereby creating jobs inside the county in an effort to provide a live, work, and play community, which can ultimately improve the quality of life for those who live in Cherokee County."

"Serving the residents of Cherokee County in the various past and current roles has been and remains an honor and a privilege that I do not take for granted," she said. "I look forward to the opportunity to continue and expand my work on behalf of so many who call Cherokee County their home."

A licensed Realtor for 20 years, Archer also serves on the Cherokee County Advisory Board for MUST Ministries, and is a vice president for advocacy for The Joan Gaeta Lung Cancer Foundation, a member of the Board of Directors for the Bonnie J Addario Lung Cancer Foundation and a member of the Advisory Board for TeamDraft.

She attended Evangel University in Springfield, Mo. Archer and her husband live in northern Cherokee County and have three adult children. The Archers are active members of New Life Church in Canton.

Margaret Thatcher funeral: Dimbleby is stately on TV's near-state ocacasion

$

0
ITV's Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield started too late and aimed too low to keep up with the BBC

David Dimbleby has some time to kill before the procession leaves the Palace of Westminster. Time to talk about the route, tell us about the undertakers and the horses – six black chargers led by Mr Twister – who'll pull the gun carriage after a pit stop at St Clement Danes.

And there are distinguished guests, mostly titled, in the studio overlooking St Paul's. Shirley Williams is generous, remembers the Iron Lady actually ironing, and praises her extraordinary single-mindedness and seriousness.

"What brings you here?" Dimbleby asks Terry Wogan. Sir T's not sure, he didn't know Lady T well, but he tells a story about her, Denis and a couple of gin and tonics I've heard before. Peter Hennessy, the historian, is on hand for pithiness. "She was a primary-colours politician who disturbed all the atoms in politics," he says.

Over on ITV … Oh: Jeremy Kyle. They're starting later. Back to One then, and Dimbleby's spotting faces in the crowd. Betty Boothroyd, Leon Brittan, Ken Clarke coming up the stairs, Nigel Lawson, Tony Blair, Henry Kissinger.

ITV have realised something's up. They start their coverage, anchored by Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby, who was aged minus two when Thatcher came to power. OK, they have ITN newsreader Alastair Stewart at St Paul's, but they're dipping in and out, going back to the studio to hear what Toby Young thinks, or to talk to Chris Evans.

The BBC it is then: you want a Dimbleby for an occasion like this, don't you? He's got the PM with him now. "I don't like to talk about opinion polls on a day like this," he tells Cameron, before going on to do just that, specifically one that shows the Tory rating surging by eight points when people were asked to imagine it was led by a youthful Maggie. Dimbleby's not neglecting his job, then, as a political journalist, even on a day like this.

He has a good funeral. The BBC cameras may have missed the Ludgate Circus protesters, but he does at least mention them. The coverage is fair, neither fawning nor aggressively disrespectful.

Once the service begins there's not an awful lot to do apart from introduce a few more people. There's one minor Fumbleby: "One of Lady Thatcher's favourite films" turns out to be one of her favourite hymns (sadly: for a moment I thought a screen would be lowered from the dome and they'd show Top Gun to the assembled dignitaries). And surely only the very, very puerile would have have been amused by, or even noticed, "Roger Gifford takes her [the Queen] up the nave."

Afterwards, there's just time for a bit more sleb-spotting – Norman Lamont, another Shirley (Bassey), Jeremy Clarkson ("I think he's very sympathetic to her politically"). The coffin is handed over to Leverton & Sons, family undertakers (founded 1789, the year of the start of the French Revolution, as it happens). And the lady inside is, as Hennessy says, handed over to the historians. Reported by guardian.co.uk 6 hours ago.

Meteor Watch: Best Shot at Viewing the Lyrids in Holly Springs

Meteor Watch: Best Shot at Viewing the Lyrids in Holly Springs Patch Holly Springs-Hickory Flat, GA --

AccuWeather meteorologists are monitoring sky cover this week for the viewing possibilities of the Lyrids, the first major meteor shower since early January, according to a recent press release.

The shower will be visible through April 26, peaking during the predawn hours of Sunday, April 21, and Monday, April 22. While the Lyrids average 10 to 20 meteors an hour, AccuWeather's Mark Paquette said there is potential for significantly more.

"It is unpredictable," Paquette said. "Sometimes lyrids have 'surges' which can break up the rate to near 100 per hour."

In Holly Springs, the weather for this week looks to be a mix of sun and showers, giving way to sunny skies on Saturday, according to the National Weather Service.

Paquette explained that the Lyrids, named for their location in the constellation Lyra, are the debris of Comet Thatcher tail when Earth's path crosses through it.

The meteors are bits of the tail's comet, usually no bigger than grains of sand, that strike the atmosphere at 49 kilometers a second. As they travel through our atmosphere, they disintegrate as streaks of light, possibly casting a shadow before leaving behind smoke-like trail of debris.

"Lyrid meteors are typically as bright as the stars in the Big Dipper, which is to say, middling brightness, but some are more intense, even brighter than Venus," Paquette said.

The "Lyrid fireballs" originate in the sky near the star Vega, Lyra's brightest star. Predawn hours offer the best view of the meteors as Vega sits nearly overhead. In the evenings the shower sits closer to the horizon, blocking many of them from view.

The waxing moon will also light up the sky until after midnight, dimming the sight of the meteors. However, the moon sets before dawn, so its brightness will not hinder the view of the shower when it moves into its peak positional hours.

Most of the country will have clear to partly cloudy skies during the predawn hours on Saturday. A section of the Plains into the upper Northwest, as well as most of the East Coast, will have cloudy skies that will make any sightings difficult for this day.

Holly Hill group outraged by city's fines over flags

$

It's something we see all the time, clubs or businesses flying flags to honor service members, but a non-profit club in Holly Hill is angry that it can't fly enough flags to honor all military branches unless they pay to do it.

Eddie Colosimo leads the group Bikers For First Amendment Rights, which supports veterans and their families.

He's been flying military flags for years, but a new city ordinance meant to target advertisements and banners only allows three flags for city businesses.

For each additional flag, the city is fining the group. So far Colosimo has been fined $300 a day by the City of Holly Hill.

“Its a slap in the face to the military,” says Colosimo. “My position always has been when it comes to paying for permits for these flags, these flags been paid for in blood, sweat, tears and lives.”

Because of the uproar, city council members held a special hearing Tuesday night and voted to put off making a decision to figure out their next step.

Susan Hawthorne comes from a military family and says the issue is plain and simple.

“As far as I'm concerned a military flag is a military flag. Its not an advertisement, its not a floppy flag, its not a banner, its to honor people who died for this country.”

Others, like Theresa Gordon aren't sure exactly what the meeting accomplished.

“We're totally confused about this whole meeting.”

But Colosimo says he'll keep on flying the flags hoping city council members will do the right thing.

“I'm a little frustrated but there is light at the end of the tunnel.”

City Council members are hoping to have a new ordinance by June 11 that is not based on the content of the flag, so that BFFAR can keep their flags up. Reported by Click Orlando 1 day ago.

Charge Your Electric Car Near South Pasadena Patch South Pasadena, CA --

There's no doubt Californians love their cars. The Golden State accounts for almost 10 percent of all car sales in the country, The Wall Street Journal reported recently.

If you're in the market for an electric vehicle, you'll certainly have your pick. With its laws incentivizing car manufacturers to go green, California has driven the push for eco-friendly transportation.

Electric vehicles can provide up to three times the power conversion compared to their gas-powered counterparts and boast an engine that operates more quietly and requires less maintenance, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. To top it off, buying an eco-friendly car can net you a federal tax credit of up to $7,500.

Though electric cars are more energy-efficient, you can still travel up to three times as far in some internal-combustion vehicles. Another thing to consider is electric car batteries are expensive to replace and can take up to eight hours to charge.

Several car manufacturers offer eco-friendly vehicles, including Chrysler, General Motors, Honda, Ford, Nissan, Tesla and Toyota.

Some manufacturers are establishing their own charging stations hoping to lure potential customers. Tesla has built a network of six solar-powered charging stations from L.A. to San Francisco, according to Car and Driver.

Whether you're looking to buy an electric car or you already own one, Los Angeles County is full of service stations—including several in South Pasadena—that will keep you charged for your emissions-free commute.

Sure, you can charge your car at home, but why do so at your own expense?

Some manufacturers are establishing their own charging stations hoping to lure potential customers. Tesla has built a network of six solar-powered charging stations from L.A. to San Francisco, according to Car and Driver.

Whether you're looking to buy an electric car or you already own one, Los Angeles County is full of service stations that will keep you charged for your emissions-free commute.

Sure, you can charge your car at home, but why do so at your own expense?

Though there aren't any stations in La Cañada now, that doens't mean there won't be in the near future.

Petruzielo: State Budget Numbers Given To Cherokee Chamber Inaccurate Patch Holly Springs-Hickory Flat, GA --

Cherokee Superintendent of Schools Dr. Frank Petruzielo has raised concerns about numbers distributed by State Rep. Calvin Hill (R-Hickory Flat) that say the state has increased funding to education.

In a memo, Petruzielo contradicts the report Hill distributed to the Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce's Board of Directors that no reductions to Quality Basic Education funding, or QBE, were made for Georgia's fiscal year 2014 budget.

Petruzielo writes in his memo that the Cherokee County School District recently learned it will have to once again swallow $24.8 million in austerity cuts for the 2013-14 school year.

He also notes the county's equalization grant, which totals $500,000, has been eliminated.

The superintendent goes on to say that with the prediction that the county will see a "flat" year in its tax digest and the increased cost of providing non-certified employees with insurance through the State Health Benefit Plan, the district will see no funding relief to restore its calendar to 180 days, reduce class sizes and to repeal the eight furlough days for all employees.

The superintendent's memo comes on the heels of Hill last week releasing numbers that with state revenues growing by 3 percent, over $289 million in "new funds" have been assigned to education funding in the upcoming budget.

Hill stated House Bill 106 gave $146.5 million to fully fund Quality Basic Education, or QBE, growth from 1.4 percent for over 23,000 students. He also said the state increased equalization grants by $38.3 million to "reflect full funding of the required $474.4 million."

"We felt that providing Chamber of Commerce leaders with an accurate portrayal of our projected 2013-12 QBE funding and the extraordinary fiscal impact of continuing to provide non-certified employees with health insurance (and/or privatizing services that these employees currently provide for necessary benefit cost avoidance) was important, since the attached report is inaccurate and could lead the business community and others to believe the assertion that we are fully funded and that there was no reductions next year to the statutorily-required QBE state funding formula," Petruzielo writes at the end of his memo.

See the attached .PDF to read the memo as well as to read Hill's release to the chamber.

Charge Your Electric Car Near Arcadia Patch Arcadia, CA --
