The Fine Arts Department collaborates to unite the Holly Springs community with the largest musical production in the history of the high school.
Holly Springs, NC (PRWEB) February 19, 2014
The Fine Arts Department of the Holly Springs High School (HSHS) located in Holly Springs, North Carolina, collaborates to present one of the greatest musicals ever written, The Wizard of Oz. Performances in the high school auditorium are on February 27, 28 and March 1st, at 7:00 p.m., as well as a matinee performance at 2:00 p.m. on March 1st.
A cast and crew of over two hundred students from the high school and surrounding Holly Springs Elementary and Middle Schools will participate in the production. Rehearsing since last October, this is truly a community event exhibiting remarkable talent found in Holly Springs. Hundreds of hours have been spent learning the music, lines, and choreography. Holly Springs High School is utilizing 'physical set changes' along with 'projection-based' changes; 16 set changes in total throughout the musical. The directing team wanted to offer the Holly Springs community an opportunity to join in on this journey to Oz and back, so they opened the Munchkin auditions to local Elementary and Middle School students. The majority of the 30 munchkins casted are from the Holly Springs area, with the exception of a few from neighboring communities.
In her third year at HSHS, Jennifer Patchett, Chorus and Vocal Director, expresses her excitement about this performance saying, “The Wizard of Oz will be a community event that brings families to our school and raises awareness for our wonderful arts programs. To watch such capable and humble students perform has become my motivation. They exhibit remarkable talent, and it’s rewarding to watch them build a community among themselves – surely these are memories they will carry with them throughout their lifetime.”
According to Rome Buttner, now in his seventh year as the high school’s Theatre Arts Teacher and Director, this is the most technically difficult show HSHS Theatre Company has ever produced. ZFX was hired to provide professional "flying" effects for key actors in the musical. Mr. Mike Collins, the HSHS Construction Technology teacher since 2011 has collaborated with Mr. Buttner to design and create the largest and most complex set the Fine Arts Department has ever used. Along with a technical crew of over 50 students, Hope Church of Holly Springs is assisting with projection and additional lighting needs.
A perfectionist at heart, especially with theatrical productions, Mr. Buttner comments, “I personally want to push myself and my students to create a musical production unlike anything ever seen in Holly Springs. This is truly an amazing event. I not only want to provide these students with an amazing high school experience, but I want to provide the community with a production that rivals those you see in professional theaters. It will be clear to the Holly Springs community that the directors, actors, dancers, musicians, and techs have had a great time creating the world of Oz.”
As you follow the yellow brick road over the rainbow and into the Holly Springs High School Auditorium for the magical production of The Wizard of Oz, the enchanting stage adaptation of the all-time movie classic will make you want to click your heels together. Join the Scarecrow, Tin Man, Lion, Dorothy and her little dog Toto, as they journey through the magical land of Oz to meet the Wizard and obtain their heart’s desires. Also watch out for the Wicked Witch of the West and her winged monkeys as you rediscover that there really is “no place like home.” This musical presented for the first time at Holly Springs High School is a production not to be missed.
Also for the first time, this musical production has reserved seating. With pre-sale tickets selling quickly, the community is encouraged to purchase tickets in advance online by completing a Ticket Presale Form. Tickets will also be sold at the door for each performance.
The Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum is produced by special arrangement with Tams-Witmark. Music and lyrics by Harold Arlen and E.Y. Harburg. Adapted by John Kane for the Royal Shakespeare Company. Based upon the classic motion picture owned by Turned Entertainment Co. and distributed in all media by Warner Bros.
