Homes cut off after cable thieves strike This is Staffordshire --

DOZENS of householders were left without phone or internet connection for several hours after cable thieves targeted their village.

Around 50 residents reported faults on the network after an underground cable in Keele Road, Keele, was damaged in the early hours of yesterday morning.

They say it is the second time their phones have gone dead in the last three weeks.

Sandra Gates, landlady of the Sneyd Arms, Keele, said she was left without connection for four days when the cables were damaged just before Mother's Day.

She added: "No-one could offer us any explanation.

"It was quite inconvenient because it leaves people without a means of communication for customers and suppliers. This has affected a lot of residents.

"Everyone thinks the thieves must have cut the wires at about 2am because all the phones rang out once.

"I didn't actually notice until I realised a couple of suppliers hadn't called me in the morning as they normally would.

"Obviously when you've got a mobile it's not too much of a problem but lots of the people who live here are quite elderly and rely on their land lines.

"Many of them need the security of being able to call relatives if they get into trouble."

John Howlett, of Holly Mews, was left frustrated when he lost internet connection.

The 31-year-old said: "My wifi went down for a good few hours. It wasn't working all Tuesday night.

"It had come back on by midday but it was quite inconvenient."

BT said engineers were sent out straight away to replace the damaged section of cable after it received around 50 complaints.

It was expected to carry out routine checks today.

A spokesman said: "We suspect an underground cable was damaged by would-be thieves in the Keele Road area.

"Engineers began the painstaking job of reconnecting customers one at a time, and the majority of those affected now have their services restored.

"It is extremely regrettable when we suffers any kind of damage to our network.

"Our priority is to restore services to those affected as quickly as possible, which is what we did in this case."

Police said yesterday's theft had not yet been reported to them but are continuing an appeal for witnesses to the incident on Thursday, February 28 at around 2.30am.

A Staffordshire Police spokesman said: "This type of theft has a massive impact on our day-to-day lives and can lead to failure of phone lines to houses and businesses, the collapse of electrical supply to homes, businesses and even hospitals, breaks in supply of gas and water, delays and cancellations on the railway and even the breakdown of traffic lights.

"Anyone found handling stolen property will be arrested."

This Man Has Been Winning For Quite Some Time

Winning Best Actor or Best Actress at the Academy Awards is one of the biggest honors that can be bestowed upon anyone in Hollywood. The award has launched the careers of many A-listers, solidifying their places in the acting world. (Meryl Streep, Jack Nicholson, Ingrid Bergman and Katharine Hepburn are just a few of the recipients). So it's no surprise that Tom Hanks and Holly Hunter can count themselves members of the select few who have one of the gold-plated trophies.

19 years ago today (on Mar.21), Tom Hanks and Holly Hunter won Best Actor and Best Actress in a Leading Role (respectively), at the 66th Academy Awards. A young Hanks looks dapper in his tux, as he proudly clutches his Oscar for his performance in "Philadelphia," while Hunter is quite the '90s darling in a sheer overlay dress, celebrating her achievements in "The Piano." This duo has us thinking about our most recent winners (Daniel Day-Lewis and Jennifer Lawrence), and how much fashion has and hasn't changed over the years. Day-Lewis fit right in, in an almost identical tuxedo to the one Hanks wore, whereas Lawrence would have been completely out of place had she been wearing a retro dress like Holly's -- another reason women need to shop more often.

Darien Residents Killed After SUV Hits Tree Patch Darien, IL --

A Darien couple is dead after their SUV struck a tree in Westmont and burst into flames early Thursday morning, according to the Westmont Police Department.

Richard Klima, 60, and Arlene Majkrzak, 71, were traveling eastbound in the 500 block of West 59th Street when the Jeep Grand Cherokee being driven by Klima left the roadway, struck a tree and rolled over. Westmont police responded at approximately 3:20 a.m., and the SUV was "engulfed in flames" when officers arrived, a police department release reads.

The fire was extinguished by Westmont firefighters, and the victims were pronounced dead on the scene. According to DuPage County Coroner Richard Jorgensen, Klima and Majkrzak were married and lived in the 1900 block of Holly Avenue.

Sgt. Stephen Thompson of the Westmont Police Department said it is not yet known what caused the accident, which appears to have been a single-car crash. Investigators aren't sure whether it was the crash or the fire that killed the couple.

"We don’t even have a cause of death right now," Thompson said.

Jorgensen said autopsies will take place Friday.

Westmont police are investigating the incident along with the Dupage County Coroner’s Office, and the Felony Investigation Assistance Team (FIAT) Major Crash Reconstruction Team.

"Additional information will be released when it is appropriate to do so," the department's release reads.
